Do you have a temp folder on every drive?

It's a habit I've picked up from, well from I don't know where. For as long as I can remember every time I make a new partition, add a new drive or install a new OS one of the first things I do is make a Temp dir. I think I have one on every drive. Usually I have a Setup folder in there and sometimes another Temp folder lol. It helps me keep junk I'm working on separate from the rest of the nicely filed away stuff. Downloads, installers, images all kinds of junk go here. If a program asks for a temp dir to store something in I always direct it to one of my Temp dirs instead of Windows default tmp.

Yes, but I call mine DELETE instead of TEMP, and then I know that things in my DELETE folder is to be clearned out or deleted. Some temp folders hold things from other programs and I don't like to use a name that Windows uses already to avoid confusion. When I download files, I will put in DELETE, and then I will have DELETE 1, DELETE 2, etc. This way, after I unzip or unrar a program, I can save the original in DELETE and move the main file into DELETE 1 or so to play with the program. For the most part, anything put into a DELETE directory eventually gets deleted.

I make a d:\temp folder and it is *the* temp folder. I changed the environment settings (\temp & \tmp) to point to it as well as the temp folder for any program that requests one.

I also move the pagefile.sys to a d: or even e: and make it a fixed size. Keeps from getting fragmented.

These are pretty old Windows tips so I am somewhat curious about other ideas from this thread also.

No, I do the New Folder thing. Every time I need a temp dir, I create a New Folder. Every time I transfer files to a new drive, I create New Folders to semi-organize.
Now, every data drive has a couple nests of New Folders. Occasionally, I find a Backup, Download, or even a Desktop folder mixed in.

not really.

I dump my temporary or unsorted files on my desktop. I'm ocd about keeping my desktop uncluttered, so nothing stays there for more than a day or two except the static shortcuts.

wot

sounds hella confusing

I put a temp folder on my backup(D) drive. Then I realized that I had set windows to make its temp on the D as well.. and my adobe audition program for audio recording makes a temp folder on my D drive.. now I'm afraid to delete things.

Well, actually I could figure it out. I just don't care enough to bother. Eventually I'll get a copy of windows 7 and re-do everything.

I have "temp" folders that end up being not so temporary. At which point, I rename them "Stuff" and make a new temp folder.

All the default Documents folders in Windows I use as temp directories. When I decide I want to keep something, it gets moved to a second drive where my real documents are kept, and the original gets deleted.

*shudder*

I have a Downloads folder and a Desktop where I can file away random crap, so I don't really need a Temp folder. I only have one 1TB drive (plus another TB to back that one up).

I only have 2 partitions one for OS and one for Data. I do have a temp folder on my data drive. Anything I'm actively working on I put there. I also have a temp folder on my server but I hardly ever use it.

I keep all my installers on my server as well and they're nicely filed. I hate when a good application ends up going away, or they start charging for it. I have not gotten deep enough to be able to do that with Linux apps though, it's kinda hard given in linux most of the time you don't actually download an installer, it's either yum or apt get, and when you do download you end up with dependency hell and a 300KB app ends up being more like 2GB worth of downloads and it's distro specific so kinda less effective to store.

I need to figure a way to do this with mysql though since it's fate may be doomed soon.

Yep, well actually I have three drives, two of them I eventually.. one of these days... need to get around to getting any last important stuff out of them, and then formatting. Both were former "C:" drives for prior Windows installs. My latest drive, a 1tb drive, is serving as the main Windows install directory, and oddly enough is still labeled H:. 😀
My data is oddly in one hell of a mess, yet, also makes so much sense. Well, apart from those two drives serving no purpose at the moment. Other than not quite fond memory.

I have a separate folder on my main drive, something I've done for a long time, named "Downloads". Within that, there are categorized folders for different types. Apps, Drivers, Videos, and then a Misc for random junk.

I like my desktop to be clean, so whenever something needs a directory for a short while, I just make a temp folder, sometimes named, sometimes not, on my desktop.

All my documents are sorted similarly in the default documents area for Windows.

Programs that create a folder of their own that ends up not being temporary, I just move into a proper category within my Downloads directory.

The mess of crap I have from days gone by is why I still have my two old drives with their original data structure intact. I've always kind of been a hoarder, and that translated into data hoarding.

My desktops used to be one hell of a mess, shortcuts, app folders, random files even of large size, all over the place. From time to time I'd get tired of it, and move everything on the desktop into a "Desktop Dump" folder, typically dated. I had accumulated quite a few of these desktop dumps, sometimes with stuff I still like to access.

What I think I should do sometime soon, is take all of those dump folders, put them into one folder on my main drive, get some remaining game saves from uninstalled games (when I ran into space issues, I uninstalled games and kept the saves in case I reinstalled them. Some I might still reinstall some day, as I rarely beat games but get the urge to continue years later), and maybe even put those two old drives into a RAID array. Both are 160gb SATA drives... be a good place to keep my more important files just in case. Otherwise my 1tb main drive is doing just fine.

recently performed an upgrade to Windows 7. So happy.
Used to have a dock bar program. What was nice about it, aside from the launcher properties, was I had special category folders linked on it, and I could effortlessly call up files within it.
Windows 7 allows me that access to, albeit I do have to launch an explorer window but it's still fast enough.
I've kept the Windows Explorer pinned to my taskbar, and in the jump list, have those same special category folders. "In Progress", "Misc", "Downloads". Also available with quick access under the "My Favorites" section in any Explorer window. Whenever I need to get something quickly, I'll either download it to my desktop, and then move it into one of those folders, or I'll just direct the download into those folders. I can quickly get to them real fast.

Surprisingly enough, the dock has always been my favorite feature of Mac OS X, and having a third party dock app was nice but I felt it took minimal, but unnecessary resources. But it helped me clean up my desktop and keep everything important one or two clicks away. Helped me commit to further tidying up my computer in general too.
Now with Win7, it's all native to Windows, I get a UI speed boost as well, and can continue keeping my data organized effortlessly and not far from quick access. Plus I don't have to dig, I remember where everything is because there is no remembering, as the organization is just so simply crafted in my head.

my c drive is strictly an OS drive... another hard drive stores my temp directory, which is labeled downloads.. everything from bittorrent stuff to porn goes in there before it gets stored.. another drive houses the "my documents" folder, and i use "my music" "my videos" and "my pictures" which are built in for this purpose in the my docs folder... and of course i've changed the target of "my docs" in windows the folder i have created..

This is more or less what I do. If there are programs I'm trying or files I'm working with they'll be on the desktop for a short while, then placed in appropriately named folders on the desktop for the medium term. Those special files that make it long enough in folders without being deleted eventually migrate to more permanent locations under the primary or secondary drive letter.

I make temporary folders which have named that start with "@". For example "@setupfiles". That way it filters to the top and I know its a temp folder.

I have no permanent temp folder. I make and delete them as needed, usually on my scratch drive.
