The idea is related to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and the following lines: "He had kicked himself loose of the earth. Confound the man! He had kicked the very earth to pieces. He was alone, and I before him did not know whether I stood on the ground or floated in the air."
The theme is basically "restraint," as the man in question has basically gone cuckoo loco and become quite a savage individual. The narrator sees this as a possibility in himself, and there you have the "floating" comment.
Any ideas?
