Do you have a screen that minimizes glare from your computer screen?

I don't, and I stare at this screen for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. It's beginning to REALLY strain my eyes, and I'm considering ordering a screen for the sake of my vision.

Does you have one, and is it really necessary?

i dont have one, have you tried upping the refresh rate of the monitor?
if you are at 60 hz, you need to raise it. it will make it easier on the eyes.

Thanks, gistech1978. How would I go about doing that?

Perfect, thanks conjur. It's at 75 Hertz right now... is that okay? I turned down the brightness/contrast, and the change helps a little, but for some reason I'm feeling a little dizzy when I look at it.

you can right click on desktop>properties>settings tab> advanced box> monitor tab and its there.
make sure the hide modes box is checked before changing to something higher or something bad might happen.

..oh and increase refresh rates on your primary system...which may mean a better video card and/or monitor.
i run at 100hertz and it makes a HUGE difference.

How close are you sitting to it?

Maybe you need an eye exam?

Maybe the dizziness is related to something else?

I don't get headaches from 75Hz on a CRT. My primary display runs @ 100Hz on the desktop, but my secondary display runs @ 75Hz to minimize EMI. If I run the secondary @ 85Hz (it's capable) I get EMI between the screens.

Higher is always better, however. :D

You're posting on a tech forum and you don't know how to change your refresh rate!? *Snicker*

Yeah, make sure it's at least 85 hz. For the majority of people, 85 and up should be fine.

No, I don't use any filters or anything. I have a 21" NEC AccuSync at work that I stare at for 6-8 hours a day and haven't had any eye strain problems. I use to get headaches until I got glasses. I hadn't realized how bad my eyes were. Now that I'm used to the glasses, I can't stand to work on the computer without them.

So if you haven't had an eye exam lately, you may want to. Even having slightly less than perfect vision can cause eye strain.

Sitting ~3 feet away... as for the dizziness, I think I've just been staring at the screen too damn long. :p Gonna go outside for lunch today, thx conjur...

Brightness and contrast controls are usually buttons on the front of the monitor. How can you tell what a good brightness level is? You want it to match the room brightness. Try looking at something with a white background, such as this web page. If the white seems almost like a light source, that's too bright. If it seems to have a gray filter over it, that's not bright enough. If your room lighting is neither too bright nor too dark, you should end up with a setting in your monitor's mid-range.
