Do you have a reaction to poison oak/ivy/mango?

I grew up in another country, and I never encountered poison oak/ivy or mango throughout my childhood and puberty. The first time I saw poison oak was when I was 19.

And I discovered it doesn't affect me. I can backpack in wilderness for days crawling through bushes with bare arms and legs, and never get a rash.

Yay!

Nope, grew up surrounded by poison oak. I can roll around in it naked and not get a rash. My spouse is REALLY allergic to it, though. Fortunately, my kids seem to take after me.

I've never heard of poison mango.

According to this, whether you get the rash is mostly a factor of a chemical property of the oil, less so your allergy tollerance.

Thanks a lot. Now that I have read the words "poison oak" I will get it.
I had it three times in the month of April. 🙁

Mango leaves apparently have the same oil characteristics as posion oak. Mango pickers suffer from it a lot...

mango's closest relative is poison ivy.

it's the mango's skin.

my mother is allergic to mangos.

No poison ivy in 51 years but I used to get it really bad every year when I was younger.

I have never seen poison ivy here in the Peoples Republic. We do have poison oak but I won't go near it.

I know what Poison Ivy looks like, so, I have avoided it. I don't really know if I will have an allergic reaction or not, and I don't want to findout either.

Same sort of thing here. Seems that I can just look at the stuff and get it. Only had it one time this April or May though.

I don't think I've ever been in contact with poison ***, but if I have I guess I don't have a reaction. 😀

Last year I had a bit of Sumac on my leg from ripping out a patch of weeds in our new back yard. I thought it was Ivy until it snatched the calamine bottle from my hand and drank it whole, belched, and laughed in my face.

In a week or so it was covering both legs, my left arm, and creeping towards my nuts. I had to get steroid injections, and that cleared it right up.

Now the sumac is back again 😱

Edit - I mean back in the yard, where it can stay cause I'm not touching it.

I remember sumac when I was a kid. Didn't it give out a milky substance?

huh, ill be damned, mangos?

I have had poison ivy/oak, but mango has never bothered me. The weird thing is that I am also allergic to pitted fruits such as peaches, cherries, etc..., and mangos still dont bother me.

Nope, I think you are confusing that with another traumatising childhood memory 🙂

From what I've heard, you still want to avoid it. As your body gets used to being in contact with it, you will start developing a reaction.

I realize daily how lucky I am that I'm not allergic to anything (as far as I know) and never had a zit/acne outbreak when I was a teenager. Then that pride all goes to hell when I walk by 1000 people on the street and can count on one hand how many of them were shorter than me.

Never heard of the mango bit either - I love mangos.

I used to get poison ivy/oak really bad as a kid. I swear I could get it just by walking past it on a hot day. I did get it walking through the smoke from some being burnt once.

I think I became much less sensitive to it as I got older. But I also became much better at staying out of it, so it's tough to tell.
