Ugh, why do people keep those things? Just throw it away, you don't need to freeze bacon grease, it's not that long of a walk to the trash can!

Some people like to use the bacon grease to cook. It's supposed to add flavor to your cooking, over that of plain lard or what have you.

Kind of like McDonalds cooking their fries in beef fat...

Growing up my hillbilly mom stored the bacon grease in a coffee can on the back of the stove... whenever she needed oil for anything... and EVERYTHING we ate was fried... she'd just take a spoonful of it....

Fried eggs cooked in bacon grease are goooood.....

BTW I eat healthily and so does my mom....now.... we convinced her to switch to Olive oil :)

No, the jar is under my sink. And it's all kinds of grease: bacon, vegetable oil, etc. :)

I don't pour it in the trashcan because when it's hot it can melt through the trashbag and then you've got a hell of a mess to clean up. Once it's cooled in the pan, it's a pain in the ass to get out. And you can't pour it down the drain, because it'll clog it up. The jar makes sense...just throw it out when it starts to get full!

had a grease trap on the griddle built into the range back when i lived in a house... jar of grease, old grease since we never used the griddle since it was annoying to clean.

I use it to polish apples! Makes them real shiny, and gives them that hint of bacon flavor.

Nope, our's is in the refridgerator, no need to freeze it. Bacon grease is a necessity to make good cornbread and enhances the flavor of all kinds of other good stick-to-your-ribs dishes. Nummy!

My family on both sides are from Tennessee so we is a bunch of hillbillies.

My great grandmother didn't even bother refrigerating it....she just kept it warm on the stove all the time.

Humorously, her daughter is nearly 80 years old.
She's helps out at an "old people's home" where most of the "old people" are younger than she is ;)

Most of you are pretty young, but this was standard practice back before the 80s. You save the bacon grease and use it instead of Crisco or butter when frying eggs, chicken, salmon patties, etc...

My mother did it, and we ate eggs (among other things) cooked in bacon grease the whole time we were growing up. Among us 5 kids (age 35 - 45 now) not a single one has a weight problem (beyond mild love handles), or high cholesterol. Nor do any of us have any heart trouble.

My mother ate bacon fried food her whole life and is 72 years old now. She's never been over weight and has heart and lung problems caused by smoking for 50 years, but not a single clogged artery or high cholesteral

Most older parents learned this during the depression, or were taught it by their depression era parents. It makes fried food taste MUCH better than simply using lard or Crisco, and it's cheaper. Waste not, want not.

No, I don't eat foods fried in bacon grease anymore, probably because I don't fry foods. I don't fry because it ruins your house, not because I'm worried about it hurting me.

At any rate, to say it's "gross" is silly. It's no more "gross" than using fresh lard to fry... and it adds a lot more flavor. If any of you eat french fries, you're really doing the same damn thing.

I mean, how do these people make real gravy without pan drippings? Cmon! Their taste buds have become accustomed to mediocrity and blandness, I guess.
