2GB DDR2 currently. Had 1GB of PC133 on a PIII 700 coppermine back around 1999-2000 era. Kept my systems with 1GB until I upgraded recently and because I now work with DV camcorder video editing and Photoshop a bunch.

I rarely ever exceed 1GB usage, but exceed 512MB almost every time I fire up a current game. If you play games at all, spend the sub-$100 for a decent 1GB dual-channel DDR setup and you'll thank yourself later.

512MB wasn't cutting it for me and p!ssing me off. FireFox likes to cache a lot of memory. I do have a lot of tabs and 7-9 windows with about 25tabs in total though
