I've stopped buying Plextor when they dropped SCSI and went IDE.

NEC 3520A w/ this firmware, Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R from Rima.com, Nero 6.6 @ 12x.

Baked, what does that firmware do to the drive?

Just curious, I've burned a couple of music and data CDs, no DVDs

Yes. Have a BenQ 800A (little older) bought in Jan 2004.
I seriously have over 600 DVDs burned on this thing - just burned 15 disks tonight. Believe it or not, I've had only 4 coasters burned since I've had it - two were attributed to sub-par media but the other two were legitimate coasters. I don't know if this longevity translates to the newer models of the brand, but this drive is a workhorse.

I'm waiting for dual layer disks to become affordable before I invest in a burner.... if I had to get one today, I think the NEC is what I'd get.

Yes
NEC i think ( I honestly cant remember)
Burned probably 100 DVD's on it. Have had, 3 coasters I think? All due to software glitches. Naturally, one of them just happened to be on a DL disc.

That firmware changes the writing strategy for different makes of media creating better quality burns with less C1 and C2 error. It also increases the write speed for different makes of media. The speed change is listed in the change log.

have a nec2510 in my main rig, an nec1100 in 2nd rig and a digitalmax in a USB 2.0 enclosure (got this one on Black Friday from Office Max for $29 after a $40 rebate), one my averatec notebook and a BTQ sitting around (that I got from Frys on Black Friday) for $29 with no rebate...heard that these weren't very good...

nec's are pretty good and can be found for around $60-$65 on new egg...

So a lot of people recommending the NEC 3520A. Newegg has it for $58 OEM. I wonder if any b&m would carry it.
