Do you have a desktop notepad file in your XP Start menu??

The contents are:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21782
[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4

and it is listed 2X in the start menu. If I delete, it tells me it is a system file and even if I delete, they return. I tried hiding system files for this folder with no luck.

What's up?

Thanks,

LJ

I run XP and I don't have that. What is the name of the file? Did you go to your start menu directory?

It is called desktop. I believe it is a txt file and it is listed twice in the start menu. I believe this is just a folder properties file. This file is on almost every multimedia-like directory. I think it is supposed to be hidden, but I have tried everything, including hiding system files in the start menu folder.

Any ideas? Nothing urgent here, but kind of annoying.

I am not totally sure about this. But is it a permanent command or dynamic? XP has this facility to memorize recently lauched programs and added them into start menu. (Which I belive was stolen from KDE) If it is not, did you try going to your start menu directory (c:\Documents Settings\$username\Start\..... And if there are two such files as desktop.ini or something, you should be able to delete them their.

Did you check to see if the desktop file attributes where set to hidden and not read only?

Rain - I am pretty sure I checked that, but will check again when I get home from work. Where are you doing or seeing this?

If I delete these files from within the start menu by right clicking/delete, I get a warning that it is a system file and even if I delete it, it is still there.

I am sure this is probably a "hide files" switch issue, but I can't seem to find the right switch. Even if I right click the file and go to properties, "hide" is greyed out.

Any other ideas?

I think I got it.

Can someone please do me a favor and do a search on desktop.ini and let me know approximately how many occurences you have of the file? I think it should only be in Windows and Windows/System32.

I pretty much had it all over the place as I am still trying to get rid of a virus.

Thanks a lot,

LJ
