If you need a bolt, take it, if you have a bolt put it in the bucket.
These can get very complex over the years.
A cornucopia filled with all sorts of hardware goodies waiting for that very moment you need something right now but don't have the means to acquire externally.

used to. now it's sorted into cans by size/pitch. metric & imp. most have drills/taps/dies.

but there's still a can of 'mystery fasteners'

Had one for wires. Last year, finally sorted it into ziplocs, labeled with a sharpie market, and made a list of what was in the box so I wouldn't have to dig.

I've got an apple box full on misc. wiring stuff...plus another one full of misc. co-ax stuff.
When we moved out of CA, I disposed of a banana box full of wire.

Seems i have a bunch of assorted wood screws but i need more nuts & bolts. Was looking for some 1/4-20 nuts the other day but couldn't find any. Hardware store had plenty though.

I have a few actual galvanized buckets with larger bolts. They are hand-me-downs from the father in law, and contain old school square nuts, etc. I have the smaller stuff in coffee cans.

The more common use sizes are sorted but I have a can of random nails, another can or random nuts and bolts and then a can of pure chaos

5 gallon bucket half full of bolts/nuts/washers/etc. Most sharp screws are separate though and separated in their own boxes. Have several rubbermaid containers full of wires, wall warts, cables, shit I'll never use but can't throw away, etc.

I have cans full of bolts, nuts, screws, and other miscellaneous hardware. I even have a couple of boxes full of vacuum tubes and boxes with other miscellaneous and likely worthless electronics (IC chips, resistors, capacitors etc) from the 1950's-1970's.

I forgot I also probably have enough parts to build an air cooled VW beetle if I every get one without an engine.

When we moved across the country my wife made me get rid of all the nuts, bolts, pipe, hinges, screws, nails, etc, I had saved for thirty years. Her reasoning was the moving company was charging by the pound, and that we would buy what ever we needed after we moved. A decision I've made her regret for nearly 15 years!

Uh I have about 25-30 coffee cans of nuts and bolts and other odds and ends... Of course I have my own shop too...?

Oh and I have a couple of bolt bins with about 50 each storage bins... Besides all the other places that I store items...

I have all sorts of bolts / nuts / washers / suspension hangars / wire clamps / etc all from automotive and home items. Sometimes I find what I need, sometimes you need like 3 or 4 of something and only find 1 or 2 of them. But I have them all sorta organized.
