I recently purchased an HP with all the bells and whistles and the media including a BDRE. Everything about blu-ray is expensive!

I backed up the hard drives, mp3s and movies.

Now what do I do with this thing? :whiste:

Do you use one?

My case only accepts slot-in drives. When I built the machine, no slot-in writers were available.
Don't see the point either. For portability, flash is king. For backups, RAID is king.
Optical disks are dying. Just like floppy did.
The internet and NAND Flash ROM killed it

Mines actually still sitting downstairs somewhere from when I disassembled my PC and water loops for a cleaning about a month ago. Haven't used a CD/DVD/BR for months.

I put one in my system earlier this year...have burned maybe 3-4 BD-R's. Still use it mostly on occasion to burn an audio cd or data dvd...

I have two - one in my HTPC and one in my gaming machine. The one in the HTPC also reads HD-DVD (whoo!)

In terms if burning I've only used them to back up family photos. I have a 2 year old and have multiple backups of her pictures in particular.

I don't have BD. I reconfigured my computer, and never hooked up my optical drives a year ago. I don't really miss them. When I build new machine, I'll likely put in a BD drive, but that's for just in case purposes. I don't expect I'd actually use it.

Nope. I have 2 DVD burners in my case and rarely use either of them. Only when I'm doing back-ups or reformatting. (which, thankfully is rare nowadays)

Well, I use mine for deep backup (offsite archiving, just in case the house burns down...) of some important data. But its only about once a month...

I like to have hard copy backups of some important items. They go in a fire-resistant safe. But I have to admit I don't use my blu ray burner as much as I thought I might.

I've had one for several years now, and have burned fewer than 200 blu ray discs.

If you want a good quality blank bd-r, look at the Smart-Blu discs made by FTI. http://www.mediamegamall.com/smartblu-bluray-disc-25gb-branded-25pk-cakebox-sbr4br25-p-28554.html If you'd prefer a major brand, stick with Verbatim or Panasonic.

Optical burners are slow. I don't have time for burning or viewing BR.

I think the one I got for my new system can burn them, but not sure. I can't say I even used it though. I read something somewhere about Bluray not working in Linux because of DRM or some crap like that, but I never looked into it. I don't even own any disc that is a Bluray so I can't test.

I hardly ever burn or read optical media now. Everything is stored on my server which has 4.5TB of capacity. I could easily add more capacity too. I have room for 2 more drives if I recall, and they're all 1TB so I could easily swap them out for 2 or 3 and triple the space.

^A good LG burner is $70 right now at Newegg. I've seen them for ten dollars less than that.

Very rarely (once a year or less), I'll burn a Linux ISO to a disc so I can install it on a computer. Other than that, I never use my burner.

Have one and initially used it with Adobe premier to make some BR disc's of the kids after I got my HD camcorder. But now mostly just put the clips on the server and play them from it. Haven't used it in a long time.

RAID is one of the absolute worst ways to backup data.

No, don't see the point.

The amount of blurays I'd have to burn just to back up all my files would be too messy, time consuming, and impractical.

RAID is one of the absolute worst ways to backup data.

I wouldn't say one of the WORST, but its definitely far from foolproof as many people think it is. Its really only covering your ass in the event of a hard drive failure.

If your house burns down, gets flooded, or your computer gets stolen, RAID would have failed you.

BEST way to truly backup files is to clone a hard drive or two full of all the storage files you've got, and put that clone in a separate location. Your shed, your car, workplace, etc..

RAID is not a backup methodology. Also you don't need to burn BR's with a BR burner...

If you want to back up your movies that would be the best application. To back up file systems a portable hard drive is best.

Reader only. Cannot think of a good reason to invest in an expensive burner and media. I rarely burn standard DVDs anymore, either.

I've got a blu ray burner. Never use it. I wanted an optical drive when I was over-hauling my rig, and fig'd I'd go with the ripper because it was on sale for like $60 on NE a while back. It came with 2 blank blu ray discs that I still have sitting on my desk that I'll probably never use.
