I'm trying to understand why all the hate for ricers, rice burners yes but ricers, well it can vary greatly but I don't see anything wrong with japanese cars. I've noticed students in my autotech class are extremely biased and believe that american cars are not only better built than japanese cars but that japanese cars are garbage etc. Personally I think that they're stupid and are stuck in the past. While the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s are nice, they're vastly overrated. I thought people only cared about performance and not looks, hence the reason why people hate rice burners.

Not all japanese cars are rice.

You can just as easily rice out an american car as an import, it just doesnt happen as offen.

Although rice is a term thats thrown around way too easily, when you see real rice, the only question left in your mind will be whether they deserve your scorn or your pity.

I hardly hate anything. Hating something like ricers is just stupid.
Do I laugh when I see someone with a riced out Honda? You bet.

However I do not have anyone driving through my neighborhood with a whisle-tip at 6 in the morning because I should be up cookin' breakfast or somethin.
If that were the case I'd probably break out the nails.

No.

I don't like the needlessly loud exhaust with w@nk performance.

Hate's an awfully strong word in my book.

I think they fall somewhere between silly, stupid, annoying and dangerous, depending on the particular incarnation of the rice in question. I'm all for going fast in cars, but doing it safely. I'm all for customizing your car, but I think spending thousands on it is terribly wasteful, as typically rice customizations look like crap (be it tacky/shoddy/dated/whatever) after about two years.

edit: I'll agree with xospec though - whatever they want to do, as long as they're not endangering anyone... who am I to complain about their hobbies?

You're confusing the old stereotype of rice (any Asian automobile) versus the modern definition of rice (any automobile with parts like LED washer lights, double-decker aluminum wings, tacky body kits, Wal-Mart clear taillights, spinner hubcaps, $10 exhaust tips).

At the same time, there's a difference between a "show car" (with all the pieces matching, painted, and properly fitted) and a "ricer" (which is typically obvious by a sagging body kit attached with double-sided tape, unpainted primer bumpers, and an exhaust that sounds suspiciously like a can of dried beans were poured into it.)

I don't hate ricers, I actually like them...when done well. If you take a crappy car and put a huge spoiler, 6,000 decals, and spinner hub caps on it, it doesn't make it faster. But if someone takes the time/money, and actually puts good/good looking parts on a Japanese car, they can be damned nice looking and fast to boot.

They are annoying to listen to and sometime hurt my eyes, but whatever, to each his own. Nothing compares to the raw muscle and throaty growl of eight or more cylinders done right;)

i always applied the term ricer to both of the above...but if we were to use your definition of ricer, than i completely agree...i hate ricers...

i still enjoy the show car though.

I like to call my mom's car a ricer, mostly because it annoys her , but I'm only joking. It actually looks nice with the body kit and rims she got installed. She needs to get it re-painted though, the guy who painted it doesn't know the first thing about painting fiberglass (it's bubbling and very fragile on the bumpers).

It's an 02 Eclipse and I can get pics by the weekend if anybody's interested.

Hate is a strong word. Laugh at some people's poor taste is more like it. And that's what "rice" really is. Poor taste. If a car is done right -- clean and actually fast -- then it's not rice no matter where it was made. OTOH, poorly-fitting unpainted body kits, ugly park bench wings, and melon-shooter exhaust with <150bhp, etc. is always rice.

Here's a great example. Some years ago, I'm driving an clean, mostly stock Acura Integra GSR on the freeway when this kid in an early-90's Civic pulls up next to me. It's cut-spring-ghetto-slammed to the ground so bad it would bounce if it ran over a toothpick, covered in primer and mismatched sagging body kits, with an exhaust so loud you can hear it mile away. He waves at me at puts into the floor, the automatic transmission kicking down a gear, the volume and pitch of the exhaust increasing to maddening levels, and proceeds to walk away from me at about an inch an hour. Seriously. I was in tears laughing. And that is rice.
