Do you hate grocery stores that inflate their prices...

Duane Reade, the pharmacy chain. I would prefer that they just keep their prices lower, but it's more profitable for them to have rewards cards. I only go there for convenience, since they have a brazillion stores in Manhattan.

One of the reasons I find myself shopping at Trader Joes more than Safeway (back in California) and Hannaford more than Price Chopper (now upstate NY).

IMO, there are two types of grocery store chains:

Those that inflate their prices and offer a club card of some sort
-and-
Those that inflate their prices and DON'T offer a club card of some sort

In the west, most Albertson's were bought by Save Mart. Save Mart eliminated the Albertson's card AND raised prices. I don't think an inexpensive, no-card store exists any more.

I hate that, but I only buy stuff that is on sale there, and buy my staples at Trader Joe's, which has fixed low prices.

Plus, they of course resell the data collected about you and even if you decline you still suffer being axed for your membership every friggin' time.

Funny I was in a Albertson's not too long back and they were still using the card thing. Damn thing was $27 without the card but the cashier gave me the card price of $22 even though I didn't have a card.

I usually go to Food 4 Less around here. No cards and acceptable prices.

Winco Foods FTW.

Up in fresno where my parents live there's a winco and foodmax and they say foodmax is still generally cheaper than winco. There's no foodmax down here but I think they're comparable to food 4 less.

Randalls... Krogers... all those pseudo-upscale grocery stores

in Texas we have a beautiful chain called HEB that has plentiful vegetables, wide selection of beer, good meat, and moderate prices

Guess who owns Food Maxx? Save-Mart. 😛. I go to the one in on Fresno and C avenue in Downtown.

I was at Pathmark once, and they have a little card for all the cashiers saying that all transactions need to have the club card scanned.
I really don't care, I usually buy stuff where it's on sale/cheapest. They might collect data about me, but I also get tailored coupons that print out. And for the cards, you can usually just put in BS info and they'll give you one if you are so concerned about it.

I miss HEB and Winco. If either would expand in to southern California they would kill the competition.

We have Meijer here in Michigan that is pretty reasonable and doesn't have a club card. It is kind of a Super Walmart of which I don't think we have any here. We have Walmart, but without a full grocery.

food 4 less is the best! I don't care that I have to scan and bag it myself I get killer deals. I just wish they had a better bread selection.

club cards suck, I have an Albertsons one on my car keys, the car never swipes and when I enter my phone # on the pad I always put the 1 before my area code and have to re-enter it because I can't remember. Yes, that makes me a dumb ass but they could easily make the stupid machine understad 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx or xxx-xxx-xxxx sheese 🙂

WTF. I don't think I have ever paid with anything but a CC at a grocery store!

IIRC Food 4 Less isn't your typical grocery store as they're non-union and cheap asses. Food is usually cheap but I prefer to shop at other grocery stores which accept cc's.

"The Man" is tracking all our purchases and prints out Hot Pockets coupons, etc.
It's all data mining - they want to know how often you buy which items, what kind of items you tend to buy with each other, and how often you'll buy how many of which sales items. They can figure out all kinds of nifty stuff then; improved inventory management, product placement and store arrangement, and what kinds of sales generate the most revenue. It's a discount in exchange for a small donation of data.

Yeah, but on most of the store cards I'm a 90 year old black woman named Helga

good luck data mining that
