That said, I just try to remember what the holiday is REALLY about. Not family, not trees, not food, not gifts, not spending...but giving thanks for the birth of Christ...whether He was born on this exact date or not.

hah christmas was great after my parents got a divorce. of course i was 12 or so.
they would try to outdo the other in gifts. man until i was 20 i got some great gifts from them both!

but now it sucks. trying to be fair and spend time with both is a pain. not to mention expensive since my mother lives in Oregon.

I like being with all my family, it's not something that happens all the time.

I like giving gifts that are a total surprise and that someone really appreciates.

There are many reasons I like the season that have nothing to do with receiving gifts.

My fiance's brother in-law and his family are the same way. Their form of "love" is 100% purchased.

I let them all win the contest, I don't buy a single presant for anyone and I tell them how uncomfortable it is for me to get any so please don't get me anything. I came over and turned on their sprinklersystem this spring, I picked up some trees for their yard with my truck, I helped their mom with her car... that is how I give and there is no season required.

This year his job has been on the line too due to lay-offs at his company, he was so stressed about it and they got him an extension with no known date on when it will be done... so he took that as time to go out and buy more crap. I hate how stupid the "time for giving" makes people. People take that crap so far out of context.

And to the OP, yes I hate this season with a passon. Mostly because of commercialism, the rest is from the people who feed that machine.

So you need a holday as an excuse to meet up and fix this problem? Sad.

I've always loved Christmas and I enjoy it even more with my kids. As for family, most of them live in another state so I don't have to see them (makes my life easier).

The only time I don't like Christmas is working retail in the toy department but this is my last year doing that.
