....or do you somehow manage to share them. I wouldn't mind setting up a couple extra system, but I really can't afford buying monitors for each one. How do you guys do it?
Someone at work told me that another group had picked up development of new & faster VNC with enhanced compression that is backward compatible with the old vnc.
I have 6 rigs....main rig has 15" LCD, 15" CRT for another, and 2 other rigs share an old 14" CRT. All have RealVNC installed, and I monitor the two without monitors with it.
I have 4 rigs, 1 with 2 monitors (my main system, 1x 19" crt, 1x 17" crt which I got free), one with a 17" crt (the parent's machine), my server, and another just plain crunching machine, both of which i control using Remote Administrator
I use a combination of both VNC and KVMs; currently, 8 of my rigs are hooked up to 4 port KVMs, with 2 more on a 2port KVM. There are 3 additional rigs that manually share a monitor/keyboard/mouse(the latter 2 are USB). My main gaming rig and my file server are the only ones with dedicated monitors and peripherals. I run VNC on all of machines to easily monitor them since they're scattered across the house on two floors plus "the basement."
I have a keyboard/mouse for each of the 3 nodes running in the basement, and just plug the monitor into each as needed. I have a monitor cable extension which helps with reach.
I have also used VNC in the past, and at work I used Remote Admin and KVMs.
I use a KVM. The KVM doesn't work well for playing games though. It says it emulates the mouse but from my experiences it appeares it uses fast switching instead.
I have only two working systems ( ), and each one has a separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor (15 inch crappy CRT with major burn-in problem for my server, and nice 19 inch CRT @ 1600x1200 for my main workstation).
