With the caveat that I work for an AV vendor, I think the days of the standalone spyware product are long gone. All of the top tier AV vendors have spyware coverage in their products.

From PcMag regarding NIS 2007: "Intelligent firewall handles program control without bothering users. Powerful antivirus is as effective against spyware as the best standalones. Better interface, smaller performance hit than previously"

No reason not to use SpywareBlaster (it is passive protection and uses no system resources other than hd space)

But I would suggest against Spyware Guard, it has not been updated in a very long time (2003) and if you really want to use a freeware (well, if you bought windows) active protection antispyware program, might I suggest Windows Defender?

so having an AV AND an antispyware isn't really necessary?

How well does the AOL antivirus work in regards to being an antispyware product as well?

Thanks sobel

AOL is still (AFAIK I don't overly follow them) using Kaspersky for AV and CA for AS...

My gut, no you don't need all those. However frankly I think the answer is dependant on your online activities. If your visiting more questionable sites your had much higher risk than if your not.

Well, remember I'm biased, but I'd get a combo av/as scanner and get rid of the rest. Obviously I'd recommend NAV or NIS, but read the reviews and find one you think is best for you.

[*]Use AOL AVS as your resident AV.
[*]Get rid of Windows Defender, Ad-Aware and Spybot since all 3 have horrible detection rates when it comes to the detection and removal of the latest malware.
[*]Add SUPERAntiSpyware free as your other on-demand scanner along with AVGAS & a-squared. Since they do not run real-time it doesn't hurt to have all 3.
[*]Spyware Blaster is fine since it is more of a prevention tool and not a scanner.
[*]You may also want to consider a free HIPS/Behavioral blocker such as Cyberhawk (recently acquired by PC Tools).
