Do you guys know anything about "Legal Claimant Services" asset recovery?

"A division of Keane"

They've been sending letters for a while about some unclaimed assets (business stocks or something) from my estranged + deceased father. My mother receives the letters at her home address. I've always felt like there's no rush to respond. They probably just *really* want their cut for helping me recover the assets.

Do you ATOT gurus know if using the offered service would be a mistake? I assume there may be a cheaper way to identify and recover the assets, but I wouldn't know where to start.

[edit]
I believe my father lived at a VFW post in Costa Rica for a long time before he died there long ago.

I'm not knowledgeable, but it kinda sounds like their system is specifically for claiming land ownership.
The S.C. one has unclaimed $$. When they 1st created it some years ago, I got a little money from an over payment of Sprint.

Found something.

http://treasury.alabama.gov/#downsection

Clicking "Unclaimed Property" on that page links to a third-party site:

https://alabama.findyourunclaimedproperty.com/

...so it looks like some other non-government entity would be getting a cut anyway. I entered my father's first and last name without specifying a city. The first 3 results are definitely him.

  • The city is in the right area.

  • All 3 have the correct middle initial shown.

  • All 3 say the reporting business is "HERCULES INC"
Wiki says that's a manufacturer associated with ammunition or weapons.
From what I'm told, my father was really into that stuff.

All 3 have a post office box listed in the "Address" column and all 3 say "Under $100" in the "Amount" column. I hesitate to click "claim" next to any of them because the web site domain appears to be a non-government third-party and because the letters from Legal Claimant Services stated a much larger value (several thousand).

There are a many pages of other results that seem to match the name only partially. I don't know why those are shown at all.

Those first 3 lines definitely refer to my father. Perhaps those 3 lines represent business stocks and "under $100" refers to the initial value of the stocks instead of the current value.

I've done that. Several states outsource to the same third party, but oddly there's no fees involved. At least in MN.

Thanks. What kind of assets did you recover? Anything like business stocks?

Nah. A check from the insurance company I didn't know I had coming, and a few bucks from a state tax return that got adjusted. (I never followed up on either.)

I'm curious as to how you will be able to recover something that isjt in your name? Let me know how that goes.

Personally I have one small unclaimed check sent to me for about 40$. It was basically some leftover money from a cable bill when I was at an apartment complex. I'm guessing the bill was to prepay for the next month and I cancelled at the beginning of the month.

We basically have to attest that we are the only rightful heirs to the best of our knowledge. This company has been trying to get Ichinisan and me (twins) to agree sign some document to that effect for a couple years now. Doubt there are other heirs but I have to sign something saying that before Legal Claimant Services gets the ball rolling.

Have you checked the federal database? You might find another avenue to sidestep these people. My grandmother on my mothers side left behind a small balance from a Credit Union in California but with everybody dead and no documentation to prove myself as an heir, it would cost slightly more to get the documentation I would need to claim the funds.

Lots of times its prorated refunded utility bills, when you move from A to B and cancel tv, electric, water, etc ... they might owe a balance back to you. Sometimes they mail it to the old address, sometimes they just report it, usually they don't try very hard to get you.

Well, we already know that it’s mostly stocks/shares and quite a bit more than some unclaimed utility bills. Definitely worth going after! Just seems a shame that this company gets several thousand dollars of it (a huge portion).

I hope for your guys sake that you guys find it all and don't have to pay some lawyer 1/3 of it.
