Hi All.

Just a question for you.

I have a AOpen H600A Super Tower case, with Antec True Blue 480W PSU.

I am looking at building another Gaming Rig.

Is it worth keeping this case and PSU or not?

The case and PSU, are 12mths old. The warranty has expired on the PSU.

How long will a good PSU last??

I would rather spend the money on a new x800 or 6800 Ultra.

Can you advise me on this please.

thanks

How long your PSU lasts isn't something that anyone can tell you. At the very least, if your PSU goes south I'm sure antec would be willing to fix it for you. As for whether or not you keep the case you have, isn't that for you to decide?

:D Nope. I expect a case to last for several upgrades, including new PSU's if needed. The real question is whether or not you still like your case and it still has enough space to house your components.

Yeah definetly depends on how much the upgrade is...I went to a water setup, so i had to upgrade the case, then my old case became my server case...but got a new one for that. It depends, are you typically a pack rat? i am, i have about 10 PSU's at home, at least that many empty cases....etc...I always find stuff on em i can use for a mod project, and i build computers on the side for friends/family so they're always flowing out that way.

On the other hand if you arent a pack rat and are a neat freak...and dont build systems for people, you'd probably be better off selling it to someone onthe boards...

Since I don't upgrade very often I have to upgrade my case and PSU. I like overclocking so I want to get a case with alot of fans, looks good and buy power supply with good rails 12v, 3.3v, 5.5v.

I got in the habit of keeping my old stuff around too much, right now I think I have about 7 boxes of crap just to hold all my old computer junk, and thats after throwing out, 2 motherboards, 2 processors, 3 cases, 2 old power supplies, and other assorted junk.

In the end its not worth keeping the old stuff around, if its crappy cheap case, dump it, if its good power supply keep it.

My main case & ps are now on at least its third complete rebuild. I found a case I liked, and I'm going to stick with it.

But then again I'm married-a new case would raise very serious questions (and retaliatory buying) about why I got a new computer.

so the plan is to keep the old case and stick in new parts? ha ha

A good PSU could last decades. Who knows?
As far as case, get a new one when you feel like there is another out there significantly superior for your needs and at a price you can afford.

No profit in THAT! :D
No profit in dying early, either. Actually, there should be more profit to be made from one lasting 10+ years than just a few...we make up a small portion of the market. If HP buys your PSUs, you're set.

We're also THE market for durable, specialty PSUs. There are enough of us buying often enough to actually drive changes like modular connections, multiple 12 rails, user-tweakable output voltages and show mods. If an enthusiast PSU (constantly bathed in dust, heat, with capacitors that die a bit every day) lasts 5-years I'd consider it cream. Hell, after THAT long most of us would want to ugrade anyway, if for no other reason than having newer technology.

That is why I try to sell the parts I upgrade as soon as possible. So in the future they won't be cluttered up in my room or in boxes. Plus the extra cash helps decrease the cost of the upgrade, and I feel bad when I have to toss a component such as an old motherboard or CPU.

I have had the same case with about 5 different rigs in it for years. Antec 1040. Big, huge, ugly, yet clinically-pleasing looking at the same time. AND, and, and, and, you can fit 1,429 different drives in it, all at the same time. :D ;)

The PS has been upgraded over the years, though. Went from an Antec 300 watt that came in it, to an Antec 400 watt, to an Antec TruPower 430.

I don't always upgrade, right now I have an Antec SX630II and I plan on keeping this thing for a little while.. I had to replace the Antec PS but that was cause of a power surge.

I might get a CoolerMaster Wavemaster soon, but that's only cause it's badass, I only upgrade the case when either I need one, or really like another. (the case with the Wavemaster - love it!)

I change my case about once every 4 months... I try and keep at least two empty cases around, mostly for spare parts. anything else, I either give away to my friends or sell on e-bay.

I have a scratched up Sonata if anyone wants it :p

PACK RAT ME!

I have the same Antec TRUEblue 480W PSU and i think its amazing. Its very very stable across its lines. Unless you new setup will require a lot more power than 480W, then hold onto your Antec - @12months old it still has alotta life left in it. Besides, how can you pass on those wikid purple/blue LEDs? :)
