Do you guys ever mod your Socket A/S370 HSFs?

SO most of these have a clip that has a bar that crosses the HS, and it leaves big slots along two of the sides. This slot presents a huge "hole" for air to pass through, that doesn't allow the air to cool the HS much. I usually install the HS, and then put scotch tape along the slot, forcing more air to pass through the fins.

Also, there is usually a gap between the fan and the HS, and I tape that up, so that as much of the air as possible actually flows into the heatsink and over the fins.

Often good for a few degrees, and you can't beat the price or the amount of effort involved.

I bet you there are similar things you could do with water. I have been an auto mechanic and I've always thought I bet I could do some neat things with water cooling. Price:performance ratio just not that great for me.

I was just thinking of a mod I would do too, based on some special transmission coolers I've seen. The tubes are actually spiral grooved to make more of the water actualy reach the outside of the tube in the radiator. Oops transmission fluid but you get the idea.

I've also heard of actual car radiators being used for computer cooling as well. I bet you could cool a whole farm of computers in parallel.

used to tape up the top part of the fins so that teh air had to flow out at the very bottom of the heatsink.

Yeah the tape is thick, so sometimes the tape that covers the gap between the fan and the HS also serves this purpose.

That's a dead air zone. Scotch tape won't make a difference.

Well how come you can feel air coming out of there then? And why does Alpha do basically the same thing, only with aluminum bracket instead of tape?
