Do you guys even shutdown the PC?

I turn off my WinME (for this second) computer when I got to bed unless I download something.

And then usually leave it off until after work.

Does all my reboots count as shutting it down at all?
Those really add up.

the problem is that it sounds like most of you are still running MS Windows 4.x (95, 98, ME, and NT). I used to shut down every night when running 98, but now that I run win 2k I leave it running 24/7/365, I just have the monitors (I have 2 of them for this one system) automatically power-down when I'm not using it, I used to have it than go into hibernate if I left it Idle for more than an hour, but I've been running seti lately, so I dont shut it down anymore.

I also have a red hat server that I keep running 24/7/365 as a server (when I have a site running, it's HD died though, so it's not running at all until I take the time to get it a new one)

If you have a stable OS (just about anything other than win 95,98, or me) than your computer should easily be able to run for a week + inbetween reboots.

All three of my rigs are on 24/7 with no hibernation or power saving because I am running Seti@Home for Team Anandtech. The only time I shut them down is when bad thunderstorms roll through.. I do have it set to shut down my monitors after 15 minutes though...

not @ home on my 2k machine.. but down here in florida on the 98 machine... every night.!!

makes me love 2k even more being on 98!!...

it is very safe to leave on... just like others said power consumption and what...

Bryan..

turn it off at night and leave it off all day when at work
only shut my work comp down on weekends, turn monitor off though yto save electricty

ah the age old reliability argument, "24/7 or on demand?"

when was the last time you saw a computer that "wore out"? I didn't think so... you should decide about leaving your computer on 24/7 based on how much power you can afford instead of worrying about your powerful machine breaking in 15 years instead of 18 if you run it wrong.

no kidding, if it's going to be terribly obsolete in only 2-3 years, who cares if the hardware has a life of only 15, or 10???
who says "damn, my 486 needs a new hard drive now, if only I'd have shut it down when I wasnt using it for all these years..."

okay, here's a better way to put it:

There are 2 major reasons that you should care about turning off your hardware when you are not using it:
1. Power consumtion (who likes paying a big power bill, not me!)
2. Stability (if you are running win 98 it's going to run like hell after several days, but if you shut it down at night it will tend to run a little smoother)

I think it is ok to leave your computer on like that, but then I usually just turn it off at night before I go to sleep and turn it on in the morning.

I shut mine off pretty much every night now. Damn Alpha fan just too loud to keep on.
I used to never cut it off before. Wife's still on all the time.

funny, I could care less about a fan in my room while I sleep, but women tend to be a little more sensitive about that kinda thing, makes me glad I have an extra room to use as an office, the fan I can stand, but complaining about it all night i cant.... 😕
