Do you guys even shutdown the PC?

I got this feeling from reading the forum that you guys don't even shutdown your PC, you know, phrase like 'Months without rebooting', or 'stable for a week'. Personally, I shutdown my PC regularly whenever I'm not at home. Kinda newbie question but is it OK for the computer to be always on 24/7?

Be kind ;)

there is a lot of arguement of which is better
some say you wear your stuff out by leaving it on
others say you wear it out by booting it up...
but i just leave my computer on 24/7 w/o/ any probs...

No, I leave mine on all the time. I don't ever have to reboot my Win2K machine, but I reboot my WinME maching at least twice daily so that it runs at it's best :)

To answer your question, it's perfectly fine to leave your PC on all the time, it doesn't hurt anything but your wallet (power wise) :)

It all depends on the person. Some people like to reboot every once in a while to clear up any memory that they can (like with win ME).

As for wear, its not great on the parts to keep them on constantly unless they have power down mode... but its also not good for them to be constantly turned on and off. That will wear them down just as fast, and wear your CMOS battery faster as well.

I shutdown my computer at night before I go to bed. As soon as I get up I hit the power button and then take my shower. I'll go to class and everything and leave it on, but I just don't let it sit there burning juice while I'm sleeping. What's the point? I'm not running a server and the 1:30 it takes to boot in the morning isn't hurting me at all.

I shut mine off whenever I'm not using it .........
Still using a modem and can't see any reason to leave the dust sucker on !!

If I leave for the week-end, or know I will be gone for several days or longer, I also shut off the power switch, at the surge supressor, which completely turns off the monitor and speaker system .............

"Killerwarts" aren't getting any cheaper ............ !!!

I used to turn it on off on off when I'm not using it. But I've been leaving it on most of the time now for a few months. Though the bootup is not long, I just wanna be able to lookup or do something right away when I need to. Plus theres always tasks for me to do, so when I'm not using it, I leave it to do extensive tasks like defragging or encoding, things that take long, etc.

turning on and shutting off the puter hurts components like the HD more than it does leaving it on. I never shut off because i like to use the puter 2 secs after i sit down :)

i haven't shut off any computer i've owned for the last 3 years. i DO have an UPS on them though...saves me when we lose power for like 5 seconds (just about every other day)...grrr

has a serial cable to shut the computer down if we do lose power for more than 10 minutes.

my theory has been that shutting down and turning on means going from hot to cold over and over, which probably isn't a good thing.

I shut mine off when I go to bed, unless it's downloading or processing something. It's set to turn itself on every day at noon, so it's always on when I need it.

Living in California, I shut down becuase
1) we dont have enough power
2) it gets too hot here, and sometimes I will overheat my CPU running RC5.

I shut mine down at night, and sometimes when I go away for hours at a time. It all depends. If I have something for the computer to do (large download, etc) then I'll leave it on.

<< For those of you that don't shut down do you have a UPS?? >>

Absolutely ! APC 500 pro hooked to an APC surge arrest pro.
I only reboot as needed for installing or uninstalling programs, about once a month I shut her down, move the desk and clean up the dust

I shut mine down when I go to bed, and turn it back on in the morning! Electricty is too expensive to leave it doing nothing these days!

Either way is OK. I shut down everytime I won't be using it for more than 1 hr. You can leave it on too 24/7! The big difference is how soon you want your system ready for use or how much money you want to save for electricity. Even on hibernate, your system uses power. Even when you shut it down with the PSU still plugged and switch in ON position you use electricity. The only time you actually do not use electricity is when its unplugged or the switch is turned off. Tuning if off or leaving in on 24/7 doesn't have anything to do about hardware wear out.
