Some reviewers say their parts they bought we're defect and the company ignored thier e-mails. My past expierence with rebates have been pretty rough. Woundering what they are like on the egg or zipzoomy. Every staples rebate I have ever sent in never came back.

Best > Lexmark - Made good on a $20 printer rebate by giving me extra time to mail in ALL the rebate stuff I needed.

Well, TigerDirect "USED" to use OnRebate who would pay directly into your PayPal account. It seems they they have stopped that, and ave gone a different route (at least on my last 2 or 3 purchases) The problem is that with OnRebate, they would email you along every step of the way, and the deposit would be within a week (or less) The problem with most rebates is that it takes 6 to 8 weeks, and by the time I get the rebate, I have forgotten all about it.

(Wow...looks like I just rambled on and on up there :) )I DO get the rebates, but I have 2 to 3 that I am awaiting, but I have forgotten how much and what they are for.

Corsair - 1 for 1 (Buy.com not NewEgg)
Creative - 2 for 2 (had to call them up and hassle them about one of them)
Foxconn - 0 for 1 (they're using a particularly bad rebate company, Rebate411)
Seagate - 1 for 1

I'm not sure if, for some reason, Buy.com purchases are easier for rebate houses to confirm than NewEgg purchases. If you look at my rebate listing there, with the exception of the Foxconn item, all of the rest were bought at Buy.com. (Only reason I tend to use Buy.com more is that I normally get free 1-Day shipping, because of their warehouse location.)

It just might be the luck of the draw. You can't draw any conclusions based on so little input.

EDIT: One thing I did notice though - when you log into Buy.com and look through your past purchases, you see a button labeled "Print Receipt", so that what you get is indisputably a receipt. With NewEgg, you see links to "Invoices". Not sure if that causes a bit of confusion among the rebate companies.

I can't really say for sure. I try to avoid rebates - I think they are a borderline scam - except for instant rebates. Those make sense. I don't really keep track of Mail-ins. I have gotten some over the years, but I am also sure I have not gotten some. I don't associate them with stores - but with manufacturers. And I can say for sure that I have always gotten Microsoft's and Adobe's.

Rebates in the U.S. date back to when Nixon froze prices in 1971. (I remember the price freezes, but yes, I had to look up the year.) Companies running sales at the time got shafted as the frozen price was the "on-sale" price and not the "regular" price. To prevent a recurrance, companies started issuing rebates thus ensuring any future price freezes would be based upon the companies' "regular" prices.

And I can say for sure that I have always gotten Microsoft's and Adobe's.
I concur - I've had good responses from Microsoft over the years including rebates. However, Enermax was a different story for me last year. Persistant emails finally resulted in a reply and a rebate check. As with other rebates, I made photocopies of the invoice and UPC bar code required to apply for the rebate.

Your experience with rebates (if any) will likely vary from other AnandTech readers.

But if you do apply for any rebates, make photocopies of everything you have to mail in for the rebate, typically the UPC code cut out of box and the invoice. This really helps should you get one of those postcards in the mail stating "we're sorry, but you did not enclose the correct items with your rebate application" even if you did enclose the corect items :)

Good luck!

Maybe that's the way rebates started, but what they are is a scam to appear to give a big discount while really not. They depend on only a small percentage of buyers actually properly applying for the rebate. A former friend lost out on hundreds in rebates on a laptop. I can't imagine anyone that lackadaisical... I've received nearly all my rebates, but I'm really testing it this season. I've got some really iffy ones on an iffy company plus I'll have a total of four with CM. First one is out there and is supposed to be "in the mail". The other three haven't even gotten to my hands yet. I'll get the first tomorrow. The others are coming slow-boat from SVC so maybe next mid-week...

I bought a laptop from CircuitCity last year, that had a laptop rebate, a bundle rebate, a printer rebate, and a router rebate. I think I got all of them.

I really tested the waters two months ago, I ordered $750 worth of computer parts with $350 worth of rebates. So far, I've recieved my CoolerMaster rebates (2), my BFG rebate, and just recently my TrendNet rebate. I still haven't recieved my Xion rebate, my EVGA rebate, my ThermalTake rebate, my Foxconn rebate, and most importantly, my $200 rebate from HP for their infamous DDR2 RAM. That last one disturbs me, because many people reported recieving their rebates in a short period of time, sooner than two months.

Despite that, I ordered more parts with rebates just recently. A CM RC-330 case, some HyperTX2 CPU coolers, and a ThermalTake Xaser V with an $80 rebate, a 3DFusion (BFG, I think) video card, and a VisionTek X1950Pro from CC. Haven't sent the last batch out yet.

Always photocopy everything. Non-scam rebate houses will allow you to re-submit/re-verify your rebates if you have documentation. Scam rebate houses will say things like "no re-submissions allowed", etc. Avoid them like the plague. Rebates411 isn't too swift either.

Hard to believe...I have never NOT gotten a rebate check. I've submitted probably near 100 in the last 10 years, had to bitch about 1 (got the check the next week)...all others have come without a hassle. Just make sure you fill out EVERYTHING and make copies before you send.

Logitech is one of the worst. I bought an LX7 mouse thru Amazon
with a $10 mail in rebate. Printed it out, sent in the bil, waited for
2 months, then they tell me "I did not buy it in the Promotional Period"
which was a bunch of BS .. I know I bought it within the Rebate Period
and Mailed it before the Mail In Deadline ... Fortunately, Amazon is good
about this, as after a quick chat with them, I got a $10 credit on my next
order thru Amazon (which I have used already) .... Logitech pulled the same
crap on my MX1000 .. claims they "Never received my mail in" ... Again Amazon
made good on it (that was like a $30 rebate .. otherwise that mouse would
still be in the store .. too costly with no rebates)

No, I bought this buffalo 125 wireless router a month ago. It's supposed to be $10+$15 MIR, but I only got $10 back.

I can't remember for sure, but i think i've gotten every single rebate back i've ever mailed.

I still try to avoid them, but my luck with rebates has been extremely good.

Of course, i likely jinxed that now...

Bruceb,
. You need to call Logitech and tell their marketing manager that their rebate fulfillment co. is pulling shenanigans - yup, ya gotta call shenanigans on them. Those fulfillment places contract to handle the rebate for x (an estimated percentage of the rebate demand) and when it looks like the outgo is going to exceed income, they begin "losing" or claiming "no receipt of submission" on rebate submissions or any plausibly deniable excuse. Keep copies of everything and some way get proof of your mail dates. Anyhoo, the tactic described above makes Logitech look bad - generally their marketing management will make it right.
