Do you give your spare change to panhandlers?

I used to never give em anything. Wouldn't even look at them when I passed em by.

But lately, I've been doing so, especially when it's clear that the guy is down on his luck (i.e. in a wheelchair or something)

It's kinda ironic that I see these guys in a Walmart parking lot begging for money when they probably could go inside and get a job there.

Nope..never. I tried giving them food once and got yelled at, so I just ignore them now. I do contribute to food banks and other charitable organizations.

Once, I saw what looked like an old lady with a "Stranded, please help" sign. I pulled up to give her a 5. When I gave it to her, she said "Wow a 5 dollar bill". I noticed then that she was just some little teenage girl in rags.

What type of panhandling are we talking about?

People who hold up signs about being jobless while standing next to a gas station or McDonalds don't get anything from me. If they're really looking like a mess and it's evident they couldn't function in normal society well, I'll toss em a buck or so, I guess out of pity. Charities or firefighters panhandling at red lights, I'll donate to as well, and usually about 5 bucks a pop. Unless it's the same charity at a place 2 days in a row

Not usually because I know most of the time the spare change or dollar bills just
goes towards beer or drugs.

I have no problem helping out a person. Usually when I need extra labor help I goto
this local temp place where they hang out at like 4am waiting for daily work. I pick
one or two up and let them work for a little $$.

Even if I was filthy rich I still wouldn't just give out the money to the people. I would
donate to charities and help needy families that are printed in the local newspaper.

Just so a guy can get a 40oz of beer is not a good cause though.

No. Begging is not legitimate work and they don't deserve my hard earned money.

No. Where I live, I believe that there are enough charity kitchens to feed them. I donate directly to charities. Plus, although it's only anecdotal evidence, I once saw a bum, who regularly begged near my workplace, buy a pack of cigarettes. No way am I supporting someone's habit.

Yeah, I'll give them spare change. I don't really care if they want to buy beer or drugs or whatever with it. It'll at least let them forget their misery.

Besides, how long does it take me to make a buck? Not nearly as long as it would take them.
