I tend to give nice gifts, and end up blowing all my loot, only to receive mediocre presents, i hate christmas!!! and since my bday is on 12/14 people double up on me...

I don't really blow my loot, I just get my friends something small and meaningful and I don't care whether I get something back or not.
 
No gifts...

We buy for all the kids under 15yr old... that's it...

We take up a family collection from all the adults, then I shop for toys for poor kids and take them to the local welfare office.

Last year, we all threw $$$ in a pot and got over $1,000!!!

My birthday is Jan 5th, so i get that combo gift as well from people. It works out sometimes though since people usually spend more on the Xmas gift then normal.
 
Our son's bday is 12/14 as well. We have always kept it separate from Xmas and made sure family/friends did the same. Cheap bastages who try "combo" gifts get an earful from both the wife and I. Fair is fair and just because a person's bday is close to Xmas is not an excuse to lump them together.

There, I partially supported your position. As for you giving nice gifts and getting mediocre in return, that's your own fault. Retribution is sweet. 😉

There isn't a law that says you have to give gifts for any occasion, you know.
 
I just wanted to say that I too am a selfish prick. I don't really get into the whole Christmas thing, I'm a selfish prick all the rest of the year too.

I'm giving (looks at list) two computers, a studio recording deck, a Gamecube, and a clean house.

I'm getting token sentimental gifts, and that's all I asked for. That and a little assistance running the holiday party.
