Do you get offended if, when purchasing something with a credit card, the cashier asks for your ID?

So here's the story....

I work at Circuit City, digicam/computer department, sometimes I ring up people if the lines are long, today happened to be one of those days. So this 6'2 guy, complexion about the same as mine (a tad darker, Im just a tan white guy) walks up to buy an ink cartridge. With him is his fairly albino looking wife, and fairly albino kid. They pull out their credit card as I say the total. I ask "May I see your ID please?" I get a very stern "NO" as a reply. I look up, puzzled and a bit shocked and the only thing that I can think of saying is why? I thought the guy was joking at first. He then starts off on how he has owned this card for 2 years and no one has ever asked to see his ID before, blah blah blah. I try to explain how its company policy to ask for ID, and that it protects him from credit card fraud. He wouldn't even let me get a few words in before swearing at me and threatening to walk out. So I look at him and tell him he can take it up to customer service, but they will ask for the card as well. So he says he's "F#%@cking walking out". Whatever, I let him walk out. I put the ink cartridge back in the security thingy and let him go. After he leaves I walk over to my manager and another guy I work with and Im like, "Hey were supposed to check ID on credit card purchases right?" (Im kinda new at this job so I thought I made a mistake) Sure enough we are, not more then 5 seconds after I start explaining what happened this dude appears behind me and starts cussing at me again. At this point we don't have the counter seperating us, and were face to face. The guys REALLY up in my face now. I wasn't having any of that, now keep in mind Im not a big guy, but at the same point Im not exactly petrified here. I thought I was gonna have to throw down in a minute. Before I did, I thought I'd mention he could speak with my manager.

Long story short, he b!tched at my manager a bit about me being racist or something like that. His wife kept yelling something about Americans not liking Russians, and her saying they were real Americans. My manager asked if he had the ID with him, he did but still didn't want to show it. (No clue why, makes me wonder if it was actually stolen though) I didn't really care one way or the other though. I left it up to my manager, and he had my check him out, while explaining I did the right thing blah blah blah. Explaining how it protects them from credit card theft (Oh, and supposedly they had their credit cards stolen not to long ago... ya right...). So he left the store, never did show his ID, and I got a good story to tell my friends :)

Anyways, anyone have any similar experiences? Is that a somewhat common thing for people to not want to show their ID, or was I just dealing with a total a$shat?

If it's company policy to ask everyone for their ID, then no.

If the cashier singles you out for any reason, then yes.

No. I appreciated it, and thank them, when they ask for my ID. It takes an extra 5-10 seconds, heaven forbid.

I like how I have a picture on mine. Cashier asks for id, i say picture is on it, they go oh, whoops. We all have a good laugh and then I run out of the store with my stolen goods.

With credit card fraud protection the way it is, who cares? I was a little worried when I payed for some Wendy's with my Amex and wasn't even asked to sign a slip, but no one checks it anyway so...meh.

No. Doesn't bother me at all.

I don't give out my phone # though (unless some type of home delivery is required), but that's a different thread.

yeah no kidding.. i would totally prefer them to ask for id than just shrug off a sloppy signature that could be anyones. I dont even sign receipts the same way I signed my card.

Nope--I actually appreciate it when they do ask. I prefer to know that the places I shop at are checking in case my card is ever stolen or lost.

Care to elaborate?

I keep my ID front and center in my wallet so I don't even have to pull it out so you can see it.

My girlfriend likes it. I don't really mind, but it's easier if I don't have to show it. I understand if it's company policy though.

Sounds like the guy who came in to buy the ink is the racist, as he assumed that you didn't trust him because he was Russian. What a load.

It doesn't bother me, but if I belonged to a minority group and felt I were singled out, I'd probably be pissed.

What does bother me is when I'm leaving WalMart and the old lady at door asks for the ticket when they see a case of beer in the cart. That's pathetic. I put the case in a bag so I don't have to stop. There are better things to steal at WM than a lousy case of cheap beer.

I don't understand how anyone could possibly get "offended."

That guy will probably die in a few years of a stroke, so take comfort in that.

I've never had a customer actually say no, and I have had tons of smart people thank me. Definitely a good policy.

I'm still confused:
left it up to my manager, and he had my check him out, while explaining I did the right thing blah blah blah. Explaining how it protects them from credit card theft (Oh, and supposedly they had their credit cards stolen not to long ago... ya right...). So he left the store, never did show his ID, and I got a good story to tell my friends

Did he get to buy his ink cartridge without showing ID or did he leave with no cartridge?
