I feel that my middle and last name are sometimes a lot of trouble.

My full name is Steven A Griswold. Note that the A is my ENTIRE middle name. It's pronounced "Ei" in Japanese, and means "Honor" or "Prosperity." It's written like this in Japanese.

I have never gotten so many problems for my middle name until I passed my California Life Insurance exam. They need a FULL name to clear with the state dept. of insurance.
"What's your middle name?"
"A"
"No, your FULL middle name."
"A"
"What's it stand for?"
"Nothing, just A."
This went back and forth for about 10 minutes. The guy refused to acknowledge that my single-letter middle name was valid. Finally he gave in and put (A) on my certificate.

As for my last name, it's Griswold. That should be self explanatory.
I don't think a week has gone by where some person has said something like, "Griswold? Like the movie, right?!" or "Ha ha! Like in 'Vacation!'" or "Do you know a 'Clark?'"
I try my hardest to laugh and not give them a big fat

. It was funny maybe the first two hundred thousand times.

Anyone else have interesting or unusual names? I'm talking about you, personally. There's already a dozen threads on "I know this guy whose name is....." and we don't care about people you know. :p

My last name contains a colloquialism for the word "penis." Now that I'm an adult, I don't hear much about it, but I heard quite a bit as a youngster.

My first name is Tonto. Take a guess as to what kind of comments people make about that. Hint : has to do with Lone Ranger.

Nakedfrog: At least with a last name you dont use it as much. Try having it for a first name and being the new kid in school for two different middle schools. At least harry isnt part of my name...that would be worse.

My first name is Ariel (and I'm a guy) and all I hear is "wow, i've never met a guy named after a girl before" or "wow, you're named after a movie"

Hmmm, let's see the calendar here...
Krye -- created circa 1978
Little Mermaid -- created circa 1989

Second, the female version of my name is Arielle, not Ariel. Thanx Disney for screwing it up!

I used to get :music:Lets go fly a kite:music: a lot (har har, like I've never heard that before) and the occasional beloved patriot (as in the slur) in spite of the fact that I'm not jewish. Of couse this was all back in junior high and high school. How mature we all were back then!

Try being named after the little girl on Bewitched... Tabetha... and then there are some people who cant pronounce it. plus i get the "hows samantha and darren doing? can you wiggle your nose? Do you do magic?"

My maiden name isnt much better... Wirtshafter... pronounced Wirt Shafter.... i get wortshafer, worstechier sauce.

my first name is derrick and for some reason no one can understand me when i say it(and i don't have an accent).

me: hi i'm derrick.
person: terry?
me: derrick
person: darryl?
me: derrick
person: jerry?

it's really annoying when they think they heard me right the first time and continue to call me by the wrong name.

also, people have a tough time pronouncing my last name. it's "matulac" pronounced "ma-TOO-lak". telemarketers constantly butcher it. sometimes they get to the 2nd syllable and just give up.

telemarketer: hello mr. [pause] muh...tuh.........[incoherent mumbled syllable].

sometimes they rearrange vowels

telemarketer: hello mr. mew-till-ack?

sometimes they leave out vowels

telemarketer: hello mr. matlack?

oh well.

Yep, sure do! I go by my middle name, which is "Wood." People always chuckle and have a hard time saying, "Morning, Wood!"

First name is Courtney and I'm a guy. I go by my middle name Ryan though, but everyone eventually finds out about my first name. Also, no one can pronounce my last name correctly, including my boss.

I'm more willing to post pics than to give out my real last name here, since it's not hard to google it and get more information on me than I'd like to give out. But it's long, pronounced JUST LIKE IT'S SPELLED, and no one can say it. LIKE IT'S SPELLED, people. My first name is Paige - yes, "Paige like a book?" yes. I'm an English major, and I've had people suggest that if I ever write a book, I should change my last name to Turner. Hysterical. Shut up and go away.

Well no, if it were like a book it would be spelled differently

Obviously, but recall that this is a spoken conversation.

Tyler David Karaszewski

Tyler seems to turn into "Taylor" once in a while. Every single time someone forgets my name they think my name is Kyle. I never get "wait, don't tell me, Mark, right?" it's always "wait, don't tell me, Kyle, right?" NO! My name is not Kyle!

Of course, the first name is the easy part. My last name isn't pronounced at all like it's spelled, and, well, most people can't even spell it right, so of course no one ever pronounces it right.

Well, the fun part was dating a guy named Amber for a while. I had a few people look at me askance, probably thinking we were a lesbian couple.

It's quite convienent having a difficult to pronounce name for that reason. If get a phone call from someone that mispronounces my last name, I tell them, "wrong number."
