I'm still newer into sushi, and living in Phoenix I'm not going to spend $100+ on sushi. My lunch is at a little hole in the wall for $8 - miso soup, salad, spicy tuna roll, 4 pieces of nigiri (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, cooked shrimp), unagi is $5.50 for the 2.

I've also had sea bass, striped bass, octopus, a some other whitefish. What do you guys recommend? I'll be in san diego for a weekend in may.

Ask someone in San Diego about good sushi places, there are places here in Seattle that aren't well known but really good and decent prices. Then we have some places that are the best in the city and cost close to $100 for two people.

It's the intense and complex flavors of sushi. Your taste buds are directly connected to the "pleasure centers" in your brain, and the chemical releases triggered by taste are similar to that of some drugs.

A good spicy tuna roll is the bomb too. I rate sushi joints by the quality of their tuna.

Nah. My goto spot on the westside is Sushi Masu on Westwood next to the 3 day blinds. Very reasonable, the guy is VERY good, esp. if you don't order rolls. I swear I feel like he's blown away everytime me and the wifey go in there and order Omakase haha.

Sushi gen is good if I feel like blowing the bank. There's a few other spots on the westside I want to try.....but I'm just gonna save up for Urasawa instead. Rather eat at Urasawa once vs Sushi Masu 6 times or Sushi Gen 3 times....

re: krunchykrome

I mean sushi at a buffet, are you fucking kidding me? lol. Not even going into the quality of the fish or the ingredients, sushi is all about freshness. It should go from the itamae's hands, onto your plate, into your mouth, in under 2 minutes. hell 30 seconds is preferable.

After you factor in quality of rice, quality of vinegar, and quality of fish, eating sushi at a buffet = WTF

well you're just going to have to take my word for it. It's a good place to go for lunch if you're hungry. Next time you're in MD, shoot me a PM, I'll treat you to a god damn sushi lunch.

Debit Food Poisoning
Credit Medical Expense

lol

I'm not gonna lie, unless I'm on an expense account I don't eat sushi prepared by non-japanese chefs

next stop - spontaneous orgasm via sushi

lol, typical pompous accountant

takes one to know one! :D

rofl.

have you been to Hide on Sawtelle?
Sasabune?

I grew up in West LA and went to UCLA and driven by Sushi Masu my whole life but never went because I thought it was one of those fake american sushi places.

Nah, I know Sasabune's rep though. I (vaguely) recall hearing about Hide...I don't get to the westside much.

Masu serves ALOT of white peoples who order nothing but rolls, so when I go in there, he usually pawns off the rolls to his assistant and then he pretty much just works for me and the wifey lol. The guy's got crazy knife skills and great quality.

Damn want sushi NOW.

And sushi doesn't have to be expensive, you just have to look around. There's a place not far from me, the prices are great (~$5/roll), the sushi is excellent, the owner makes his own noodles from scratch, and every time I go there's a line out the door and I'm practically the only "round eye" in the house. Those are the places you're looking for.

key to great sushi is sitting at the bar. Its as much interaction as it is dining.

I'm happy when I'm eating sushi. Satisfied with a full belly. Usually my nose starts to itch while/after eating sushi. A high... no, not really.

As for all you can eat sushi. In buffet style it is aweful. Going to a sushi restaurant that serves all you can eat for ~$23 isn't bad. Its not as good as Kabuki's or Tokyo Tokyo (or any other nice(r) restuarant that doesn't offer all you can eat) but it's really not bad.
I can easily eat over $100 of sushi at a place like Kabuki's, or I can go to somewhere else and pay $30 w/ tip n all.

I have a feeling this thread will turn in to Sushi name dropping contest soon.

But yeah, its ok to like 7-11 california rolls, just don't proclaim it the best ever.

Yum, my favourite!

It's funny though, this city has become so overrun with Izakayas recently, it's almost becoming difficult to find a pure, clean, decent sushi place, without paying for freaking Tojo's.

Sushi doesn't mean raw meat, it means "pickled rice". You can put many, many things in a sushi plate.

In my experience, you get what you pay for with sushi....

it wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst either. I got the sashimi(fish no rice) it was good.

in american, we associate sushi with raw fish regardless of the Japaneses meaning of the word that is the meaning it holds in America.

Haven't done the live fish sushi or the Fugu Sushi but have had the live lobster sashimi and didn't find it that enjoyable.

Out of the other exotic types of sushis, did enjoy the abalone sushi though that was mighty pricy. Love fresh uni and fresh mackerel.

Don't start, it will cause a chain reaction of snobbery and that won't be good for anybody.

Meh, I've eaten the stuff pretty much right out of the water and I'm still alive and healthy.

I do admit though I can no longer eat swordfish since we got some raw stuff in at the restaurant I used to work at and there were the giant worms burrowing around in it. The chef/owner just said it's always like that, you just pick them out. I nearly threw up on the spot.
