Do you generally know how many miles you can drive between fill-ups?

I have a friend with a hybrid. I e-mailed him the following question:

"What kind of range do you typically get in your hybrid before you have to refill on gas?"

He says he has absolutely no idea, he just fills it up when the light comes on. He literally has no clue of the range of his car.

I am OCD about many things and I will tend to observe things that others do not, but I do not believe it is that out-of-this-world for me to know that we get a range of approximately 310 miles in my car and approximately 285 miles in my wife's car between fill-ups.

Do you know your vehicle's range or is it weird that I know this?

EDIT:

Follow-up question:

Do you know anyone who does NOT know this information?

Not weird. Or maybe I'm just equally as weird. I reset my trip every time I fill up. I also know precisely how many gallons I've used when the light comes on - 12.8 out of a 17 gallon capacity. So I generally can go about 350 miles before my light comes on, and I can go about another 100 miles once the light comes on before I'll run out.

I know the exact fuel range of my car and I usually fill up when I reach 320 miles (I will have about 30 miles left).

12 gallon tank @ 35 mpg (37-38 mpg if I drive conservatively) so 420-450 miles. I never go that far anyway, I usually fill up once a week, and usually I have 310 miles on the trip odometer.

yes i do.

i always reset my trip mileage thing every time i fill up. it's just a habit, especially since i've only had my car for like 6 weeks and am trying to somewhat change my driving habits to get better mileage since it eats gas.

My car tells me how many miles are left in the tank. It's usually around 350+ after a fill up I think. Naturally, there are several assumptions I'm sure are built into that calculation, but it's a pretty good estimate anyway.

roughly, but i usually fill up based on either days since last fill up or what day it is (ie next time i'll be in town), like if it is thursday/friday and i won't be driving that car again into town until the following week and the tank is less than half full, i'll fill it up

400 miles or so. I can see it being a bit trickier with a hybrid, though...but I would think most people's driving patterns are fairly unchanging.

'99 monte carlo v6 3.8 liter, I only get about 215-230 per fill-up (less than my wife's SUV). I think it's a 15 gallon tank. Time for a new car I guess.

I do, people that don't know this information are the ones on the side of the road waiting for a gas can because they ran it til it was empty.

Another good reason to know this information? If your gas gauge breaks you aren't fubar'd.

I reset my trip odometer ever fill up.

I can get 400 miles per tank but usually fill up more frequently than that due to timing of being near "cheaper" gas stations.

I've driven almost 700 miles on one tank, mix of highway/city driving. 14.5 gallons of diesel. I drive a VW TDI

All the way from full to empty.

I know the Expedition gets 15-16 MPG for highway driving...and 12-13 around town, and has a 28 gallon tank. (about 400 miles) The Jetta gets 24-28 on the highway and about 20 around town and has a 14.5 gallon tank. (about 350)

I can do the math when I need to.

Under normal work week driving I know that my van can get 280-320 miles of range depending on how full I can get the tank (it shuts off the pump very early...there's room for 3+ more gallons usually). That's 13-15 gallons of gas

My wife's car will get 420-460 miles out of 14-15 gallons of gas.

300 miles and then the wife wants the Jeep filled up.

Depending on the weekend; that can be one or two weeks.
The mileage to empty claims 370 after a fillup.

Regretfully, my vehicle has had 3 tanks of gas since purchase last year :(

It still amazes me how diesels aren't more popular here in the US. I know they used to get a bad rap for being dirtier, but that's not really the case any more.

I usually fill up every 370 miles every week. That is with projected range of 400 miles.
If I drive coservatively, I usually fillup every 430 miles, with projected range of 450 miles.

1998 Acura 3.5RL with 18.5 gallon tank.

Damn you Americans with your imperial measurements...

For jackrabbit city driving I'm usually around 300+ miles (Prius) before the light starts flashing. However, I only usually put in around 30-34 litres, which is roughly around 8 or 9 gallons. I fill up about 2-3 times a month.

The most I've ever gone in this car is about 500 miles. However, the tank is very odd. It has a flexible bladder which means that the tank size varies with the temperature, but I believe it maxes out at around 12 gallons.

I get about 450 miles to a tank in both my MINI Cooper and my Chevy Cruze Eco. The Eco has a tiny 12 gallon tank, but it gets slightly better mileage than the MINI (which oddly has a larger tank).

I once pulled off 500 miles on one tank in the MINI before, but I was running on fumes by that point.
