So, do you? Fold? 😎
Folding@Home is a great distributed computing program that analyzes the behaviors of protiens, the building blocks of every living thing! By installing the Folding@Home Client and allowing it to run in the background, you can help society learn more about the behavior of Proteins which can increase our knowlege and possibly lead to better treatments or even cures for several diseases such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.
People with Diabetes, AIDS, and Cancer may also strongly benefit, and this should especially interesting to people here, considering 1 in every 2 living men in North America will get Cancer at some time in their life time. That of course means, every second poster in this thread will end up with Cancer 🙁
How can you get involved?
You can start Folding Protiens simply by installing the Google Toolbar and Google Compute (IE ActiveX control). If you already have the Google toolbar, just go to the second link, click the button, and say yes to the ActiveX Control popup window. (The Google Compute FAQ)
Or to get a little more involved, consider downloading, installing, and running the client! It shouldnt take more then 5 minutes to get going, and once its up and running, theres almost nothing you need to do, but check your stats if you like. The client is almost completely self managing. The GUI client is a little easier to get started with, but the Command Line Client or CLI is slightly faster. (The CLI client leaves a regular sized button on the taskbar, but that can be hidden using something like FireDaemon to install F@H as a Windows Service).
For more information on getting started, check out the AT Folding FAQ.
If you need help, stop by the Distributed Computing category of the AT forums. The guys around there are very helpful.
