You've been here barely over a year. Thing haven't changed much in comparison to 6+ years ago.

your join date is later than mine, but we both know you've been here a long time. think about that.

I've learned some, the car advice here is good (though dedicated auto forums usually are better for that), but the real reason I visit is for the laughs, which usally mean YAGT's.

yes. i learned there are idoits, narcisists, shy folks, women haters, women lovers, geeks, nerds, brilliant folks and every kind in between on here just like in the real world.
I have learned about life and people and the way we intereact with each other.
I get a kick out of a lot here.

And a lot of cynical people.

This is a place where real-life people can show their true faces without REALLY showing their true faces, and it's usually not pretty.

are you saying that you hide behind a "mask" when you interact with folks in real life?

Doesn't everyone speak tongue-in-cheek? Do you always express everything you think in real life? Do you meet an ugly girl and say "holy sh!t you're ugly!"?

i don't express everything I think. Neither here nor in real life. Whatever I say here I would have no problems discussing in real life. But you know what? You don't learn from doing nothing. And if I see a girl who i do not find particularly attractive to me, I won't say that straight to her face. Same as here.

Alright, maybe it was a bad example - but it's easier for people to belittle others because they're not talking face to face. It's also easier to be inconsiderate (re: the thread about the teenager who accidentally killed her mom while parallel parking?) online, since there are no repercussions.

I agree it is easier to belittle others when your not face to face, but I find that type of behavior immature. I prefer the educational approach, although that sometimes doesn't always work. I'm glad I haven't clicked on the thread about the teenager who accidently killed her mom.

You've just highlighted another problem with this board - immaturity. No serious thread can stay on-topic without at least one quip from some immature idiot.

I admit, though, I'm usually guilty of this as well, but I try to make as many of my comments productive and thoughtful.

while some YAGT are hilarious, they are also interesting, you see how different people react to each other.

Anandtech has been great for me. From researching different network and hardware stuff. Learning about different real world stuff (wine, cigars, etc) and even stealing a good brutuskend joke to use on friday night when you're out drinking. Plus if it weren't for anandtech i would be very bored at work.

I get a kick out of how naive and uninformed a lot of people are on this forum. I am also impressed with people who grace this board who really know their shat too.

I've learned who to ignore and whose opinions to value. I've learned a lot about life, people's ideas, and what people are angry about. I learned that P&N is a place to generally avoid.

I've learned about ever single phishing, Nigerian, and ebay scam... multiple times each.

I've learned that there are a lot of people with no clue how to react to things their girlfriends have done, or how to attract a girlfriend in the first place.

I've gotten a lot of help in making car repairs.

It's been reinforced for me that a lot of people take better care of their cars than themselves.

I've heard every possible joke, read amusing news stories, read shocking news story, and visited weird/interesting/entertaining website on the internet long before anyone else I know... (example: 2 months ago, I was forced to show some coworkers "endofworld.swf" who had never seen it before). Better yet, is when my coworkers/friends are bewildered when I can bring one of these up during a casual conversation. "I can't believe something like that has never caused an accident." "Well, actually, there was an accident in Colorado about 2 weeks ago caused by that. 2 people were killed." "How do you know these things?"

I've learned how to awe some of my coworkers when they make comments like, "I have to drive to Buffalo to get new ink cartridges for my printer this weekend" with responses like "circuit city has xxxmodel of printer on sale for $xx.xx with a $30 rebate. Grab an ad while you're up in Buffalo, drive over to Compusa, have them pricematch CC's listed price, Compusa will also deduct the rebate; it works out to $14.92 out the door." "Ugghhhhh, how do you know these things??"

The one thing I never learned, is if a hole was successfully drilled (with a liner so all the molten stuff didn't refill the hole) through the earth (North pole to South pole) and something was dropped into the hole, would it ever pass the center of the earth? Anyone here know the answer? (Note, the hole isn't a vacuum... there's air in there.)
