Do you find it funny when people think picking up litter helps the environment?

So there's no question litter is bad and makes a town look trashy and should be avoided..but I've always found it funny that people think picking up litter is somehow environmentally responsible, like there's some MAGICAL place it can go where it just DISAPPEARS. It's simply transported from one pile of garbage to another.

I sometimes think it would be better if we just let it pile up in the streets. At least then we'd be reminded just how much of the stuff we generate.

Landfills also have a complete bacterial ecosystem to help many types of waste break down much faster than they would in other places, like the street or your front yard.

If a person really wants to help the environment he/she should simply off his/herself. His/her body will provide nutrients for decomposers which in turn provides nutrients for producers. Not to mention the decrease in energy usage, waste creation, and food requirements.

Yeah, because letting all our trash blow into the rivers and lakes would be just peachy.

It is environmentally responsible. The majority of drainage systems cycle to the nearest river.
When you see garbage in the streets you have a choice whether or not you want it to end up in the river or local retention pond\wetland.

At the least putting into the landfill keeps it from negatively impacting waterways\wetlands and wildlife.

So the question is, did you get fries with that?

And yes, it is responsible as many above me has posted. Hmmm, landfill in the middle of nowhere or local pond/river/beach?

Visit Iraq. You'll find out that leaving your trash on the street isn't really that fun

It makes a location look nicer not to leave trash everywhere. While that may not make it all go away, it does imporve peoples lives not to live in a pile of trash.

..I'd like to see more disposal bins for dumped electronics. I see old monitors and TV sets all over the place. Just think. 10 years from now we'll see old 50" flat screens dumped on the street corners.
