Do you find Aero Desktop (Vista) laggy?

Today I did something I never really thought about doing until now - I turned off Aero. I never really thought my system had a problem, but turning this off greatly improved system performance. With Aero on, the best I could transfer across network computers was about 15MB/s (gigabit ethernet), but I can get over 50MB/s when Aero is turned off. This isn't just a one time thing, I tested this over and over again and it gets the same result every time. Another strange thing is that USB drives are significantly faster. When Aero is turned on, portable apps on USB drives are unbelievably slow and take literally minutes to start sometimes. With Aero turned off, programs on the USB drive pop up immediately.

Does this sound normal or is my computer just completely f***ed?

Our systems are very similar, and I've never had trouble with Aero. I don't have specific numbers for transfer rates, but my portable apps launch as fast as would be expected from an average thumb drive.

Aero relies on your gpu and drivers to work effectively. Since your gpu is well beyond what is required by Aero, i'd say double check to see that you have your chipset drivers properly installed and install the latest nvidia drivers. Theres something wierd going on with your machine.
