As far as I know, HIDs must be auto levelling and have a washer system here in the states, we adopted this from the same requirements in Europe.

Ummm, my HIDs nor my bother's have a washer system.

His don't auto-lvl but mine do, he has a dail for his.

My mother got an '02 Yukon denali. She got it because she is 5'2" and likes to sit up higher. That was the main reason she got it. She also thinks that in a normal crash she will stand a better chance in an SUV and is tired of mini vans.

Hmm... I found an NHTSA doc discussing the it being mandatory, I assumed they already had. Our car (05 MINI Cooper S) levels and has a washer system.

Auto leveling isnt going to help you when a vehicle can have HIDs that are above your windshield

Yes it does.

The whole point of auto-leveling is that it points the headlight to the factory spec, which is aimed perfectly between not blinding people and range. The height of a vehicle doesn't matter if it's aimed properly, just look at Semis. Their headlights are much higher than even SUVs yet very rarely do I see one that is blinding. The point of auto levelling systems is to keep that proper aim even when going over a bump, or up hill, etc.

Unless the autoleveling is smart enough to point down at a right angle when an SUV is on top of you, then it isnt going to help.

At a reasonable distance, it works well, but until its smart enough to judge the distance of the car in front of you, its half assed.

You rarely see a semi thats blinding you because most of them know better than to tailgate since they drive for a living and they know they cant stop for ******, and Ive personally never seen a semi with HIDs.

But that's not the fault of the headlight. It's a bad driver. in that case, i'd say it's an arms race, but not because the headlights are being made to blind people. It's an arms race because lots of people are stupid.

Out of curiosity, how politically incorrect can I be before I get banned? Cause this thread is testing me.

You can take it pretty far as long as everyone doesn't jump in.

In that case, I think women should require a special license to drive any vehicle over 3500 pounds, especially if theyre asian.

There, I said it.

Id personally extend that to anyone that has proven to be accident prone, because I think its downright irresponsible and stupid to buy an SUV cause its safer, for so many reasons.

It is partially the fault of the headlight, cause someone with halogens doing that is irritating, but someone with HIDs doing that is outright blinding.

At any rate, it should at least triple your tailgating ticket and put 5 points on your license, if youre doing it in a large vehicle with HIDs, because it is that dangerous, and people do it ALL the time around here.

Dont jump in now guys. 😛

And on top of that, any woman driving an SUV caught either:
A) talking on/fumbling with her cell phone
B) putting on makeup
C) apparently making an effort to stay in your blind spot
D) trying to ram you off the road cause they cant figure out how to merge onto the highway

Should have her license immediately revoked, burned, and blacklisted.

Semi headlights aren't necessarily higher than normal SUV headlights.

Man, the stories I could tell about my last two exes

Id call one "If I can take the turn at 20, Im sure I can do it at 60 too", or maybe "what are those mirrors on the side for again?"

And the other I fondly remember as "Even though I'm on the left side of the car, my body should definitely be in the middle of the lane", "Why do curbs keep hitting me", "You know to stop backing up while parallel parking when you hit the car behind you", "If I stop paying attention for a second the world pauses around me and I wont hit anything" or my personal favorite "Why stop smoothly and slowly when I so enjoy the ABS vibrations, brake pads and rotors are cheap, and I'm sure he'll have turned by then anyway"

headlights are getting brighter ... This is very good for safety. Brighter headlights = people can see the road better.

Smaller? No, not really. There may be smaller a higher number of small cars on the road, but in general all new models of previous versions are bigger.

Maybe basing them on 1970's models, yes they are smaller. But coming from what they were in the last 10-15 years, they are getting bigger in size.

More people are buying midsize vs full sized cars.
More people are buying compact vs midsize cars.

Sure an accord now is bigger than an accord 10 years ago, however, I see just as many civics as accords these days.

While each specific model may be getting a bit bigger each year, more and more people seem to be buying smaller model cars.

Also, thankfully, SUV and Truck sales have been dropping a bit too ..... which also contributes ... in general, the median size of the car on the road is smaller then it was last year and smaller then it was 10 years ago ..... at least that's how I see it....

The high beams on my corolla are more than bright enough. I don't see why people need HID. Just another way to con people into buying luxury cars.

<sidetrack> If your car came from the factory with halogen bulbs can you install HIDs? I thought I remember reading a post where someone upgraded their headlights and toasted the wiring and melted the connector.
