Do you know any native americans?

Sure, hunting buffalo is gone but that was only plains indians anyway. Others still live like they did, assuming they want to. It's their choice to buy a new pickup with their casino check or just walk/run everywhere like in the 'good old days'.

The ones who were relocated to crappy land got screwed, but there are some living in reservations on nice, traditional land. As I said before, it's a mixed bag.

Yeah it's like people complaining about slavery. I mean Africa is pretty crappy and their descendants get free cell phones. If it weren't for slavery they'd miss all that. Then there's the Jews. Yeah the Nazi thing wasn't great but as a result they pretty much got the sympathy of a lot of people and they have Israel now. It's a mixed bag.

Still waiting on my casino to show up.

I guess you mean centuries later on some of the other ones have those.

No... Natives have it good in the modern world. In the olden world, they flat out refused to assimilate with European cultures.

I'm a Native American: I was born here, my mother and father were born here, their parents were born here, their parents were born here. Sometimes I feel sorry for me, but then I get over it. My family is a mix of Irish-Italian.

Nice try, and I'm married to a NY Italian/Brit :)

Teasing a bit, I'm predominately German/Brit/Welsh I guess.

Lenapes were pretty much wiped out so fast early they really don't exist as a tribe these days as far as I know.

Was pretty much a genocide that worked I guess, not that I'm apparently that bitter about it.

Other than the flea infected blankets and pushing them out of Manhattan to Indiana and basically stomping on heads to save bullets type of things in those days.

*shrug*

Lenape

Grew up there, the Delaware were basically transplanted Lenape, or just another name I guess.

] Anderson, Indiana is named after Chief William Anderson, whose father was Swedish. The Delaware Village in Indiana was called Anderson's Town, while the Delaware Village in Missouri on the James River was often called Anderson’s Village. The tribes' cabins and cornfields were spread out along the James River and Wilson Creek.[54]

No, they get more money from the government and they tear up their government houses and want more and more. Fuck 'em. I used to live in North Dakota and my dad currently works there laying fiber optic cable. On the Res they drive by and throw beer cans at him and his crew.

Umm, wow, heh.

Sounds like some of the Hawaiians I ran into when I was a Native American US Marine stationed therem and being called a howlie and crap.

Strange world isn't it.

I'm not even that Native.

I did have a almost pure Hopi Indian room mate a one time stole my Camaro one night by just grabbing my keys off the table and wrecked it with his other Hopi buddy.

Was some in house rage there :)

For the ones that were affected back then yes, as well as the children and grandchildren that were still looked down on, oppressed, and that were missing parents/grandparents. But not for the current ones. Same with slavery, I feel sorry for the ones that were enslaved as well as their direct descendents, but not for the current generation. I feel sorry for holocaust victims and survivors, but not for the current generation of Israeli Jews (many of which are or are becoming as bad facists as the Nazis were).

Especially people 'demanding' that you 'have to feel sorry' for such a group gives the opposite effect. For a long time there was 'white on white' slavery in Europe too. Does that mean that everyone has to feel sorry for us as people we've never even known personally were affected by it and that anyone pointing out our errors is therefor racist against us?

I usually get into these discussions when someone starts on how we owe blacks for slavery and should pay them for it. Was it bad? Sure. Are there consequences ongoing? Injustices? Sure. Should things be different? Yep. But I'll tell anyone who hits me with the "that was the worst thing ever" attitude that there weren't any blacks or anyone else here but native americans, and that side of my heritage was virtually exterminated to make room for the slaves. Yeah it sucked for slaves, but it sucked to be dead too. A most successful genocide. So where's my money? I'm not going to get it and I'm not asking for any, but if the day comes that we're going to have to pay for wrongs done over a century ago I'm going to the head of the line for a check and by rights it ought to be a whopper. Should I get one? Nope, nor should anyone else. But I would take the free restaurant deal for me and MonGrel. :D

In southern Oregon there is a little town I used to live near and go into. There are a lot of Native Americans there. And a cultural center for them. They used to all gather at the road bridge and jump in the river off it. Then the city decided to build a bigger bridge and make it so they can't go swimming there with the way it's built.

Damn dude just let them have their place to swim :'(

There would be a mob of the kids and some adults doing it. It was the main road in town. I guess they thought it looked bad for the town. I kind of thought it was nice to see them there all together having fun. And it kind of made me think what it was like for people in the 1950's or so when it was a simpler time. Good to see that again in this day and age. But of course someone had to ruin it.

I feel about as much pity for them as I do the countless tribes the Romans obliterated. Those are also somewhere up in my family tree much like I'm sure there were slave owners up there somewhere too. All things I'd never personally partake in but it's hard for me to damn my ancestors without having a clue who they were and why they did what they did. Guilt like this is born from the idea that people need to be the "good guys" and this is America's one huge dick move it can't explain away. They really need to take a page from the rest of the world and move on. We won that war, they lost. Never have you seen a conquered people so well taken care of in the world. Tell the disenfranchised urban youth who can't afford shoes that this other group of dicked over people get free college and other perks. Then ask him how bad we should feel about it.
