(carried over from another thread, was deleted because it spawned a nef fest)

I have a friend or two that refuse to read fiction and read only nonfiction books, they state that reading fiction books are "just a waste of my time, you do not gain ANYTHING from them"

Do you read fiction novels for fun or do you agree with the above statement?

Personally, I love fiction novels (not all, but by the writers i prefer) and read about one a month for fun.

Do they not watch movies too? A lot of fiction are based on real facts with a made up plot.

Their loss. Good fiction is filled with ideas, emotions and situations that expand your horizons by making you think and feel in new ways.

In the past month, I've picked up roughly ~15 fiction novels. So I guess you can say I don't think they're a waste of time.

Fiction can be anything from mirroring reality to incredible fantasy. Saying fiction in entirety is useless is a very stupid (as in moronic) statement.

I personally belive the non-fiction is a waste of time. All of it already happened. Why does it matter?

reading a fictional book is like watching a movie. both arent real. but they help expand your imagination.

I think 99% of fiction books are a complete waste of time assuming there are plenty of non-fiction books to read instead (which there is).

I personally don't watch movies much either. Last movie I went to see was Star Wars. Last one before that was I, Robot.

i used to read fiction, but after a while it suffers just like music and movies. theyre mostly the same themes played out over and over again.

nowadays i just read some laymans science books and magazines.

Not a waste, but not my favorite.

I've read one fiction book for fun in the last 15 years.

great book :) I love how the protagonist is thinking about life and deep thoughts, etc. as he's casually lobbing nuclear weapons from his power armor.
