Do you expect a word of appreciation from your boss for working PAID overtime?

in my company, the printing press operators in the publications dept are hourly employees.

During busy periods, the dept might print 6days/week. it's voluntary to come in on Sat, and the operators are paid time and half if they do.

i was working on a sat. during lunch in the cafeteria, i overhead a couple of operators saying it's the 4th sat in a row they're working, and bitch that upper mgmt hasnt said a word of thanks for coming in.

WTFBBQ?!

you volunteered to work Sat, and you're being PAID time and half for it.

i can understand if you're not getting paid extra (like me), but you're getting cold hard cash! you have immediate gratification.

Someone explain this mentality?

Depends on who's asking for it. If its the company, yes, a thank you would be nice.

Don't expect it but it costs nothing to say a couple of words of appreciation to boost morale.

I don't expect it (or should I say didn't expect it when I had a job that offered overtime) but I think it is a good management thing to do...

let's be honest overtime, especially volunteer overtime, is usually a chance for an employee to make a few extra bucks and show the upper people that they are serious about the job, committed to hard working, and willing to sacrifice a bit for the company... You know... in case there is a chance of promotion or raise, it is an extra little check by your name...
not getting acknowledged is a little bit of a let down... would be nice to know it was appreciated...

My old manager was great about letting people know they were helping out and that the uppers knew that they were... I as the high school kid doing it just for cash didn't really care all that much, but I expect the older folks who depended on the job and future promotions and such to secure their family would really like it.

there's no paid OT at my company, so it's kind of a moot point, but my boss is pretty good about it.

generally, if I have to stay more than an hour late or get called into the office after-hours, I'll make up the time somewhere else and come-in late / leave early on a slow day.

I don't expect I (I get time and a half for OT), and I don't care. The extra money is "thank you" enough. ;)

Wow, they're being soooo nice, paying time and a half. Actually, if you're working overtime, time and a half is mandatory. (unless you're salaried.) It's not something the company does out of the goodness of their hearts.

Smart management thanks its employees for putting in the extra hours. :) My wife works a lot of overtime. The place she works at has a postcard system in place where management will send personalized postcards thanking staff for things they do that go above and beyond what's expected of them. Once an employee gets so many of them, they get to trade them in for even nicer tokens of thanks. Just a couple more, and my wife and I will be enjoying an all expences paid weekend getaway to Toronto :) It's a great way to build morale in a company. Most employees aren't motivated solely by money.

Actually, some salaried (called salaried non-exempt) employees are due overtime.

I don't think people should expect the thank you, as most management out there is horrible, but I think that good management should praise their workers for volunteering to come in on a Saturday.

Don't thank me, just pay me. ;)

Thanks would be nice, but not worth complaining about if it doesn't happen.

The people you are describing sound like the type that just need something to complain about.

I have about 200+ hours of OT since Jan 1st. If anyone said thanks I'd fall over dead.

The people I have working for me, I say thanks to almost every day as they're heading out the door. This is regular time, not even overtime.

"Voluntary" overtime is sometimes bullshit. Either you do it or get fired.

No, the thanks I get for paid overtime is reflected in my paycheck.

I work at least 18 hours of overtime a week though, so it is pretty much routine.

We didn't get OT when I was in the Army.

If it's voluntary, nope. If it's the mandatory OT I worked for almost 6 months of last year, and 3 so far of this year, yea a thank you would be nice. Some better management would be too.

I voted no. If the company could cut the hours, then they would...

Op, ask your friends if they'd thank the bosses if they lost hours on their next check...

It's all about the individuals involved. If there are people lining up for overtime then no thanks needed, but if your boss comes to you and pleads for you come in and you begrudgingly do so, well then a little atta boy couldn't hurt.
