Do you ever take "mental health" days?

Not including national holidays, vacation, or when you are truly sick...how many days a year do you miss work/school just because you don't feel like going?

I would say about once a year I wake up and just have no desire to go pound paperwork in my office all day.

I'd say once every 4-5 months I'll just wake up and call in sick for the day just to have a day off.

sure did. every now and then you need one. i worry about people who work long hours all the time without some release. weekends are good but they don't always cut it. sometimes you need extra time or a day in the middle of the week to just goof off.

As much as I can get away with, without being fired. I will never understand anyone who isn't dedicated to spending as little time as possible at work.

I never do it, but I'm still in high school, you don't really suffer.

Taking a day off would be counterproductive, I'd become bored and stay in front of the computer. At the end I would feel shittier.
I have the sensation that students who do this one time tend to repeat it, and in the end they become those sleepy guys who don't come to school once a week.

How about trying to advance your career? Being out of the office all the time always looks good when you're up for a promotion.

Then you'll be on par with the American education system.

Seriously, I agree that a job shouldn't rule your life, but you seem to go overboard bashing people who are working and trying to advance. Weren't you complaining in P&N a couple of weeks ago about not having a decent job? I think I know why.

when i feel like i need it and have the time on the books... though often having to catch my work back up when i return is enough stress that i think the "mental health" benefits are negligible.

No. But I do not have a problem with my employees doing it when they need, as long as they still have personal time left.

But watch out, I was just burned by an Employee that thought he needed Mondays off for mental health days. Took a few to many and was terminated...but...NYS says that being "being sick" is not misconduct and he will now recieve his 4 million weeks of unemployment for sitting on his ass.

So remember kiddies, tell your employer you are "sick"

LOL, I guess I did. Look, I'm not the biggest fan of work and it should never rule your life, but come on -- bashing people who are actually out working is a little ridiculous especially when you mention you can't find anything decent yourself. To his credit, he did accept responsibility for it.

Yes, I do take them frequently.

It is encouraged by management as long as there's nothing pressing, so that we do not get burned out.

Yeh, but it's just called PTO. And they are usually premeditated to a point. I can't just wake up and say "fuck it...cashing in on a PTO today!". If I give a few days heads up and there's nothing major going on that I have to do I'll get approval.

Most of my "mental health days" are actually spent doing physical labor around the house that needs to be. But it also usually accompanied by several beers along the way so it's all good. Being able to get something around the yard knocked out without tending to a 2 year old or missing a football game on Saturday/Sunday is mental health enough :)
