Do you ever just run across things on the internet that leave you numb?

And read the obituaries of her dad and her fifth-grade sister. The obituaries noted that her mother pre-deceased them. My friend is only 21 now. That was her entire immediate family.

I did some more checking and found out she was attending the same university I was at the time of their deaths. I was going to school with her and never knew it. She's a senior now, and I'm graduated and out of the area.

Man... I remember all the overnights at her house and how nice her parents were. She was virtually my only friend in grade school.

Wow, thats a depressing story. I think its time to google my old 2nd grade buddy.

Drive out and visit her.

I live two states away now - she's in CA and I'm in WA. I dunno if she'd particularly want to see me - re-unions with friends from 5th grade can be awkward when you're graduating college. May or may not have much in common anymore. I found her email address and emailed her just a hello.

That's a freaking short drive. What, 12 hours? Plus it's not like there's nothing else to do while you're in CA. 🙂 Create a few mix CDs, take off at midnight....by the time you feel a little tired, the Sun will be coming up and revitalize you. Get to a motel just in time for check-in. I've driven 4x that far with no rest before.

Finding her on the campus will be the tough part.

Um... I hold down an intense job in a corporate environment. I'm not a college kid who can pick up and go. Showing up on her doorstep is going to get me nowhere.

I appreciate the sentiment, but doing that really makes no sense and isn't feasible.

I contacted a gradeshol friend of mine last year... Her mom was a second mother to me... within 2 months of me getting in contact with them both, her mother commited suicide.

Terrible things do happen to people, unfortunately.

I would try to contact her.... it's not about what's best for her. It's YOUR past.

When someone is truly one's friend, then it most definitely _is_ about what's best for the other person.

HC, blessings on you and I'll keep your friend in my prayers as well.

On a slightly more humourous note, no less than a half-dozen girls I knew from school are ... ummm ... "employed by the seedier side of the internet" according to the pornspam I get. 😛

Why are you all trying to get Hotchic to go and visit her? Just because someone was your friend in high school does not mean they want you to drive 12 hours and visit them because their family died. I sure as hell would not be driving anywhere and visiting anyone when it could do more harm than good.

Not even high school - grade school. I don't get the "go visit her" suggestion. And say what? "Remember me? I heard your parents died."

I've tried googling a few people I used to know but most of them either have common names so I get pages of irrelevant hits or I don't get any results at all.

I agree with both of you. Just no good way to bring things up and it's been so long that it's not likely that she'll even care that much. Intorducing more awkwardness into both lives than is necessary.

You said it left you numb. I guess I'll take that as hyperbole and retract the visit her recommendation.

Funny you mention that. Recently I've been wondering about a good high school friend who had meningitis and ended up having brain surgery. After I graduated 5 years ago I never heard from her or of her again. I've checked on sites like classmates.com and haven't found her.

I don't see where the suggestion is beneficial, even if it weren't hyperbole.

Pics!?!?

Don't listen to this 12 yr old idiot who's telling you to go out and surprise visit someone you haven't seen since grade school.

The best thing is to do what you're doing. Email her and just find out how she's doing and what's going on in her life. Then see if she's interested in still talking to you and go from there.

Don't be that psycho that shows up on her doorstep after 15 years.

Several years ago I decided to try and look up some old High School friends.
I finally tracked down one or two only to find out I HAD DIED back in the 70's! :Q

Rumors had been going around that I was killed in Viet Nam (Story #1) or that I was killed in a auto accident in California (Story #2)

It all came as quite a shock to ME!

To prove the rumors wrong, I went back for my 30th Reunion. 😉

This is a very interesting thread. The internet is a powerful tool.

I recently was contacted by my old highschool girlfriend (and first real 'love'). Apparently we live less than 2 miles from each other now. Shes married and has two kids. She wanted to tell me about a reunion type thingy going down at a place we used to work at together. Its a very small world.
