If I get filthy rich I'll give back, but I'm not going to compromise my living situation to give money back.

As far as HS goes...
I went to a public school. I pay taxes.

As far as college goes...
My college is a pain in the ass. They should consider it a blessing that people are paying them to keep going there as it is. Drop 3 of my classes on the first day of the term after freshmen already register? YOU ARE LUCKY I DIDN'T BURN THE BUILDING DOWN!

I just get a little worked up about that POS sometimes.

On behalf of all university students, thank you to all the people who do give back, it really does make a difference.

i always thought I would but I think college professors are overpaid... well a lot of them at least. I've met too many a$$holes who don't care about students

So maybe I'm a little biased we got a new building with 800 new computers this semester paid for mostly by alumni. Why the hell would you complain about someone giving you money, though?

LOL thats the funniest thing I've heard all day. Of course I go to a state school so maybe that has some influence and I would be more likely if it were private. After attending and seeing all the money wasted, especially on administrative salary I wouldn't give them a dime more than tuition. After that our transaction is complete. If don't send amazon.com and extra $5 just because and I won't the college either.

I went to a private school, and I do make an annual donation. I was really poor when I was in college, and never would have made it through without scholarships, tuition breaks and work-study jobs. I want those opportunities to be available to others.

Instead of remembering the few people who were overpaid and didn't care about students, I think about those who could make a lot more in the private sector but choose to help students instead - not just faculty, but staff people also. Those are the people who made a difference for me, and I am indebted to them for helping me to be successful.

I feel bad for those of you who say you wouldn't ever consider giving. I suspect you picked the wrong school.

I couldn't disagree more... I don't understand why some of my profs decided to teach instead of work in the "field" and make tons more money. That is dedication.

And as for giving, I just graduated 2.5 years ago, but I do and will continue to give every year.

Nope. The college I graduated from has a tendency to WASTE money on "projects" that don't benefit the students. It's basically a "what the president wants, the president gets" with few or no questions asked. The only way I would donate would be if I designated it to the music department, to a specific student, or to the office that I worked in. They solicit me from time to time but the solicitation letter goes straight to file 13. ;)

If I become rich one day then I probably will. Things like financial aid help a lot, and as kranky said, I'd like things like that to be passed on to others.

I donated $1 last (fiscal) year... I'll donate larger amounts when I no longer owe them $16,000.

Either:
a. You go to a school with no endowment (community college?)
b. You pay extra tuition to make up for what your school's endowment would normally cover
c. You're an ungrateful bastard.
