we've always done our own. This year will be the first time we pay someone to do them. Wayyyyy too many questions to post in the stickied thread, although I did have some of those questions answered. I'm paranoid about getting myself in hot water with the IRS.

I started doing the taxes myself. Then for a couple of years gave all the receipts to the CPA and received a completed return back. But she started charging too much for a fairly simple return. The last drop was when she told me how much she was going to charge us for the partnership papers this year (my wife and I formed a domestic partnership). This year I'm doing TurboTax all the way.

Yes, I've pretty much done my own taxes for over 20 years.

I usually do my taxes using TurboTax. Then I print them out. Then I log on to TAXACT.COM and file for free. I usually get my refund (if I am due) in 2 weeks.

Good luck.

it means there is a form you need that hasn't been approved/released by the IRS yet, 2.2 would be the date they expect that form to be available. the program should update itself with the new form, then you can complete your return

yeah EagleKeeper PMed me about it. I may just have someone else do mine anyway. I don't feel very confident in doing it myself even with turbotax. plus its like $60 to do federal, state, and e-file.

I saw that taxact site someone mentioned and they appear to have everything for $16 so i may try that instead.

Does Turbo Tax count as someone preparing them for you? I polled not, so I guess I do my own taxes.

I used H&R Block once about 7 years ago and that was a nightmare. $140 to have some schmoe use a computer program. I learned after that to spend $20 on Turbo Tax federal and do it myself. For state, CT has a free online method. And to boot, I get my CT state refund in 3 BUSINESS DAYS! :D

you can do TurboTax on your federal for free, and e-file for free. since you can print out your return and your state return is usually very simple and based off of the numbers you generated on your federal form, it's no big deal to do your state return by hand using the info turbotax generated.
