Do you consume games?

Back when I was a young lad with minimal income but tons of time, I found myself getting at most 1 or 2 games a year and just playing them repeatedly. This was particularly the case when I played mostly PC games - (Civ, Counterstrike, WoW).

Since getting back into console games and abandoning PC gaming altogether, I find myself simply consuming games as they come out - playing them, getting bored, then moving on to the next title. I think console games are prone to this type of behavior more than PC games, as they are easier to swap in/swap out without having to install or change anything.

I just beat Fallout 3, for example. If this were 5-10 years ago, I would be replaying it - finding every location - learning all the secrets. But now, I'll probably shelf it and move on to the next game.

Is this common practice or do I just have ADD?

i typically will stick to 1 game, but only if it's multiplayer. i won't replay games single player mode over and over.

that said, i would say about 95% of my gaming is done online.

gears of war 2 is probably the only game I will play for a long time, possibly with the exception of LBP if I find it used for like $30 in a month or so.

EDIT:

over this past year, the majority of my gaming time has gone to Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, Burnout Paradise, and (soon to be) Gears of War 2.

I don't normally play a game straight through. I tend to buy a game, play a few levels, then buy another game and play a few level, then pick another random game and play a few levels. I don't wanna get addicted to one game and play it non-stop like CivII and WoW.

I play most games several times over. I can't really afford a lot of new games, so I have to get all I can out of the ones I do buy.

I am a member of goozex and do like 2-3 trades a week so I usually play through a game and trade it, but there are some that I keep around. CoD 4, GTA 4, Forza, Guitar Hero... etc

i think this is a common practice for console titles.. i find on the pc..i play the same games that i played years ago.. for the console.. i find my attention kinda leaning away from titles after about an hour or so of playtime.. such as madden. was playing with brother.. by the 3rd game.. i was hella bored.

Depends on the game. I'm not going to dump tons of time into most JRPGs past finishing the story lines. OTOH, in a sandbox-style RPG (Fallout 3, Oblivion, Morrowind, Mass Effect), I'll go and explore everything. In other words, I'll explore, but not grind.

Unfortunately the older I get the more games I buy, but don't seem to complete many of them, I keep telling myself that I'll go back and do it but just haven't found the time. I still have some games in the shrinkwrap that are over a year old that I haven't started yet. When I was a kid and new games were more difficult to come by it just made more sense to try and go through the entire thing. I voted sometimes, there were a few games as of late that I tried to complete everything on so I guess it depends on the game.

I've always just stuck to a few games. I have 4 or 5 games on the 360 that have kept me occupied for years.

i tend to play games and finish them then move to the next or lately never even finish before i get to the next one. so few games these days are good enough or fun enough to keep me interested for very long. So much crap out there so much undeserved hype, it's ridiculous.

The games I know I'll play repeatedly, I'll buy. Like Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, Oblivion, etc. The games that I'm likely to just play through once and never play again like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Devil May Cry, etc, I rent.

Depends on the game, but I have a large collection and I horde. I refuse to get rid of any game. Too many situations where I thought "GOSH I wish I hadn't sold that" especially when you only get a few bucks per game. In regards to playing them, there are plenty of them that I haven't played yet, but that's also because I will play the hell out of a game before moving on. I can play through most games a couple of times before getting bored, but I don't really do it for RPGs unless it has a New Game+ or it was really worth it.

A lot of games out now are made intentionally easy so you can beat them. I think bad to the good ole days where some games were downright impossible and if you could beat a game in the first few tries you were either using a game genie it was a game for kids.

If you're playing a game just for the story or for the sake of saying you beat it, then you might as well just rent a movie and save yourself some money.

I pretty much only have 4-5 console games at any point that I'm playing. Usually they are all 3-6 month old games that I got for half price on eBay. I use these to keep getting new games either trading/selling the ones that I don't want to keep. PC games are usually the ones that I'll keep playing for years after they come out because I don't have to hook up another console to play them.

I tend to play one game to death before moving on to the next game. Games are just too expensive for me to buy tons of titles to "consume". I will do every quest, play every level... whatever there is to do, I'll try to do it.... until I"m completely done with the game... before I go off and get a new one. Even renting games, just is too pricey... around here I think it's $7.50 for 5 days or something like that.... price adds up unless the game isn't that good and you never want to play it again after 5 days 🙂

A good way to combat crappy cost of renting games. i know blockbuster offers something like 1 game at a time, for like 22 bux...that also works for dvd's i know some games i dont really like so i return them and get another one. now at 8bux a pop...that would really drive people nutz. it works out nice. cuz i can try games for a day and not feel stuck with them **cough condemned 2 cough**

i'm consuming, and caught myself again today at gamestop.. :frown:

i'm trying to limit myself and begin buying the "hot" games after 3-6 months when they drop in price, but I just pre-ordered Left 4 Dead.

"Playing"
Rock Band 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
GTA 4
Castle Crashers

Really Want:
Little Big Planet
GOW2
Fallout 3
Fable 2

I go through phases. Sometime for like a 2 month period, I will do nothing but play whatever game it is I'm playing every chance I get. Then I will go another couple months without even touching the console. Wash rinse repeat. Same goes for PC games.

I play one to completion (or almost to completion) and move on. Don't have that much time for games anymore so I try to make the most of it by having variety.

I suppose. I think its because there's so many good Console games coming out its crazy.

I currently have Fallout 3, Dead Space, Farcry 2 and Socom confrontations. I plan to play Fallout 3 and Dead Space more then once. Heck. I just logged 40 hours into Fallout 3 and still going strong. I just got Dead Space and Farcry 2 in the mail. I like Dead Space but only got to play for 20 mins. Farcry 2 is Ok. I will probably beat it and send it back. Socom i will be playing for awhile. I really like the multiplayer. I wanna pick up RS2 and GOW2. We shall see but i most likely will get them.

Beat and move on - I think it's a sign of the saturation in the gaming world. There is a lot more titles out there now.

However, I don't think Fallout 3 is a game you should strive to beat and delete. The main campaign is a disgustingly tiny portion of the game and if you aren't exploring the world you might as well have only played 10% of the game.

I always play one game until I finish. I haven't done the 'play a bit, try out the other' in a long time. If I really want to try the other game, I still force myself to finish the first one.

As for playing 100s of hours, this is rare. Few games are good enough to keep my attention that long, primarily RPGs. And these releases are few and far between. If it's an FPS, I'll play it through twice probably with my second run a week or so later.
