Do you consider yourself a power user? (Poll + feedback)

Power user is a term which is used define two type of people that go to extremes:

Someone who has super powerful hardware, or someone who pushes their hardware to their hardware to the extreme. The latter is a more common definition of the name, but either can apply.

What do you feel is the true definition of a power user?

what comes after power user?
are you still part of power user's after you reach that next level?

power user means you know wtf you're doing, you aren't the average "I only use my compuTAAr for hotmail & aim" person.

I agree. I've got my hands into a lot of aspects of the computer and I'm always willing to learn new stuff about it and on it. So I would most definately consider myself a power user. Or as TheEvil1 stated, "Uber User". 😀

I am not a power user, I am root. Well not really, I use sudo, but its less impressive to say I am not root, but I could be, if sudo wasnt so nice, easy, and secure!

To me, a power user is someone who, when trying to solve a problem, tries everything, and then reads the instructions😉

Bah, who needs instructions? Just dive in! 😛

I don't play games all that much, but I do

-rip DVDs and encode to Divx on a regular basis (short of benchmarks, this seems to me to be one of the best ways to push a CPU).

-I have MP3s taking up more space than some people probably use for thier programs - almost 9GB at this point.

-I am in the process of earning a CS degree, which involves a lot of programing - something a lot of people would probably rather not do, but I enjoy it.

-I've experimented with various and sundry OSes, though admittedly not as much as some people here. Several flavors of both windows and Linux.

-I would gladly leave my system on 24/7 and join a DC project if my desktop were a little quieter.

EDIT: Build my own systems, too. Only prebuilt I've ever bought was my original 400MHz AMD about 3 1/2 or 4 years ago. Started replacing stuff in that thing almost immediately 😛.

Well, the utility company sends me a bill every month telling me how many kilowatts I used... so, yes.

Good point. If I turned off all of the systems in this house more often (3 desktops and one laptop, only 2 of which are mine), my parents would probably notice a nice drop in the electric bill 😱 . I tend to leave my desktop on all day, and so does my brother. The other two aren't on quite as often.

Yeah sure, why not 😛

Not trying to brag n0c, and I know there are many, many people here who easily have me beat; I was just trying to point out that I do indeed use my computer for more than e-mail and research papers.

I know, just joshin' ya. Or something.

I'd say a power user is somebody who knows what they are doing.

Some things that in my opinion make sombody more of a power user are
1 Fluent in at least 2 OSes
2 Capable of understanding simple scripts (ever if its just understanding html code or making minor adjustments to files in the rc.d directoryor conf files).
3 Capable of keeping ones PC somewhat secure.
4 being known to be helpfull with PC problems by family/friends
5 Can assemble a PC in 15 minutes in the dark with only a little flashlight that straps on to ones finger after drinking a case of mountain dew and not sleeping for 48 hours. (ie .. no difficulties in putting things together)

That being said ...
I have over 200 Gigs of mp3s ... and 99% of which are ones I've had since over 2 years ago ... currently I have stopped downloading pirated music and decided to pay for my cds. I still rip them to MP3 just for the convienience of having it on my drive ... MP3s do not make anybody a power user ... anyone can download and install an FTP client and then download 24/7 and get many gigs of mp3s.

I have 4 pcs and an old mac laptop in my bedroom ....
my 2 main pcs are on my main desk .... I have 3 19in CRTs on this desk .... all at 1600x1200
my main PC uses an old school 101 jey IBM keyboard relettered to Dvorak Layout. My linux box uses a regular old school 101 key keyboard. 3 of my PCs have laser mice. I have never bought a full system (except for the laptop, and a couple cheapo refurbs at geeks.com) At least once a week I swap a part from one box to another, or buy a new component. I think I qualify as a Hardware Addict Supreme. Or perhaps just a little bit more extreme in my geekdom.

Most of the time I know what I am doing, but never consider my a power user.
