Do you consider resale value?

I drive it til it dies, then I make it run again. Once I finally get tired of it, I'll go by a new (used, but new to me) car and repeat.

My first car was totalled by some old guy, all it took was about $1500 worth of damage.
My second car I sold for $2500, it had 250,000 miles.
I had a Volvo that I sold for $1500 at one point. It had about 350,000 miles.
My current car I paid $19,500 for, now has a value of about $9200 (four and a half years old, 77,000 miles) and it'll drop even more in the next five to eight years by the time I'm ready to move on.

If I were concerned about resale value, I'd take the money difference from a more expensive car and put that in a savings bond. I'd come out further ahead that way.

I don't really care for the most part since I'd rather enjoy the car than worry about what happens when its time to replace it.

Im driving my 16th car since 1988, so Ive realized that you are always driving someone elses car.

Owner enjoyment>resale value

I only consider resale value in that I always buy used cars, so lower resale value = lower price for me 😛

Edit: And I plan to keep my current car for as long as possible, until it requires repairs that exceed the value of the car at the time...would still be driving my last car but it got rear-ended and totalled before I even got to a year with it 🙁

Resale value applies to cars that don't provide a bond with their owner.

My car gets me and whatever I want to carry from point A to point B. If I wanted a bond with it, I'd put epoxy on my seat.

I don't neccesarily look at resale value directly, as I generally intend to drive any car I own into the ground. But I do look at it as a potential indicator of quality/reliability.

Yeah it's important to me.

The last 20+ cars that I have purchased in the past 10+ years were cars that I was going to keep forever but it just doesn't seem to work out....

I don't generally care about resale value on *anything* I own. I generally buy things that I plan on keeping. If I was planning to get rid of stuff, I wouldn't buy it in the first place.

Depends - if the car has horrible depreciation, I'd buy it used rather than take the initial depreciation hit. If it's a Honda or Toyota, I'd rather buy new.

I didn't but do now.

After my current vehicle is paid off and I'm ready to get a new one in about 5 years from now I'm going to make damn sure it has a high resale value.

^ What he said. I keep my cars until they get totalled by some idiot driver or can't be driven anymore. I've only had 3 cars though.

No, its just not important (state reason)

I buy what I like. I don't care how much or how little it's worth when I'm through with it.

same here.

I buy a 2yr old car with low miles. drive it until the cost of fixing it is more then it is worth. then either give it away or sale it in the paper.

I just find it odd that so many people can live with the same car for so long.

I was bored with my prelude after 3 years, I just wanted something new. I'm bored with my Civic Si now and I want another, newer Prelude. I had to get rid of my Trans Am because of insurance costs from too many tickets, but although I loved the LT1 in that car, the tranny had to be rebuilt after 40,000 miles. Which is disgraceful and definetely the norm for auto tranny's made by GM that can't handle lots of power.

I always thought someday I'd want another Trans Am or Camaro but I just wont consider it any longer because of resale value.

If I could afford it, I'd have a new car after every 3 years regardless of what I had. If I get a promotion I'm going for at work, I might even skip the Prelude and buy a 2004 or 2005 G35 instead. I just don't like making payments on cars because every car I've ever owned, from the very first car I got at 16 has been paid for with cash. But even if I get that G35, a car I want more then just about any other that I've wanted in a LONG time. I know I'll want something new after no more then 5 years.

Luckily, almost every car I would want has good resale value - I just have to for go getting another Trans Am, Camaro or GTO or GM car. I just refuse to lose so much money from such an expensive acquisition as buying a car. And I'm a little suprised that the poll turned out the way it did
