Do you carry insurance on your cell phone???

I bought a Razr from a buddy who works at Cingular. NIB for $125 for just the equipment, then paid $25 to unlock it (service thru Tmo). Not wanting to bet up sh1t creek if something happened to it, so I called "Asurion" to add the coverage as directed by Tmo.

$5.99/mo - No problem
Deductible - $110!!!

She said it's based on the retail value of the phone, which for the Razr is apparently $270!

I told her cancel it.

Do you carry phone insurance? How much per month? What is the deductible? Who is it through?

We have it for my wife's phone. It was stolen at the school where she teaches earlier in the year.

The insurance is through whatever 3rd party Verizon contracts with. It costs $5 or $6 per month and has a $50 deductible.

I have a Vertu platinum phone which cost me a pretty penny, and it actually comes with insurance. I think if you get the model with diamonds in it you have to insure it yourself though.

I'll bet it won't happen again until this phone gets old and then you get a new one and forget to get insurance on the new phone!

My wife lost 3 phones.. through the 2 year cingular contract, we did not have insurance.. I had to shell out 100-150 each time to buy a used phone off ebay.

Now with verizon, we got insurance, we're about 8 month in, she dropped the phone (e815) 3-5 times and its about to break... dont know how much it'll cost but hopefully not much through insurance. My friend has the same phone and she dropped hers like 20 times.. getting new one soon also through insurance..

Some people claim they lost the phone and sell it used on ebay.. but if its broken, asurion wants the old one back.. i claim a few broken blackberry through them..

Of course not. If my phone is broken or lost, I can get another phone for less than any of your deductibles. All I care is that the phone makes phone calls.

You get insurance for things you cannot ever afford to simply pay out of pocket (a house burnt to the ground or a $500,000 car accident medical bill). I bet all of you could swing the cash to replace your phone. It may hurt, but you could do it.

Not worth it IMHO. My wife and I are very careful with our cell phones. Why pay for insurance unless you just can't keep track of it or drop it all the time.

You should drop your wife and replace her.

Not worth it to me. Had my last phone for 3 years with no problems, and no problems in the 6 months I've had my current unit.

Interesting that some peeps have $35/50 deductibles.

When I worked at AirTouch several years ago (now Verizon) it was a $35 deductible. Regardless if you had the base Moto Flip or a top of the line Startac.

I was just so taken aback when she said $110 deductible...after 6 months of paying for insurance, it'd cost me more to file a claim then it would to buy a new one!

I'm in the same camp.

Don't waste money on buying insurance on little things like a cell phone.

I've been using a cell phone for the last 6 years. Never once have I lost one or had one damaged, so no insurance for me.

Der der I can subtract, 6 years not 8. (22-16)

No way, just stupid IMHO. If you can't afford to replace it, you probably can't afford the monthly bill and shouldn't have one in the first place.

unless you're so clumsy that you think it's safe bet that you WILL break or lose your phone and you can't afford to replace it, i don't know why you'd want to do it.

I got it when I signed up with verizon, and then decided I didn't need it. Of course I keep forgetting to actually cancel it.
