I was always told not to, and I don't on anything that I can fix myself (re: anything computer/tech related), but the sales people make such a good case with stuff like furniture or beds...

What use is there to buying protection on furniture??? Good quality furniture will last generations. It's not like there is a lot that can go wrong if it's well constructed.

Never. By not buying them, you become self-insured for the one time something does break. The only thing I would consider buying a warranty for is a computer, but never more than 2 years, and I can avoid that by getting a computer with a 1 year warranty (or more) standard and paying with an Amex card which doubles the warranty up to an additional year (for under 5 year warranties).

Never. In my experience stuff doesn't break that often. I'm sure I've saved enough by not buying extended warranties and protection plans that I can afford to replace something that does fail outside its warranty period.

I've only paid for one of these extended warranties once. It was for a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV27 @ BB around four years ago. It broke at least three times (non-user replaceable parts) and on the third time, BB replaced it w/ a brand spanking new HP DV2025NR.

Make sure to check what your credit card provider offers. For example, AMEX in some cases offers extended warranty if you purchase and pay for an item with your AMEX cc.

From my personal experience, about 75% of customers buy extended service agreements on used cars. 50% on new cars.

I don't think protection on appliances generally represents a good value as a percentage of purchase price.

its excellent on laptops (applecare ftw) and especially from anything high priced at costco (i bought my dell 2407wfp and it comes with the lifetime warranty - the 90 warranty thing doesnt affect stand alone monitors!)....its just for the peace of mind and if anything goes wrong with it.

Almost never. Once I got "scammed" (ok, persuaded) into buying a 2 year plan on a $250 receiver for $30. I returned it (edit: clarification for "it" = the plan) a 2 weeks later cause I kept feeling the bs behind it, and the fine print where so much stuff isn't covered. The real killer was that the plan didn't cover anything until the manufacturer's warranty is up so one year of the plan goes straight into the garbage. It's now one year later and the receiver is still fine. If it did die, I wouldn't care cause I'm seeing its limitations now...

Otherwise, if it breaks it breaks. By the time it does, you probably want it dead (especially for electronics) so you'll "have to" upgrade.

yeah, I'm starting to wish I hadn't bought it :/

wonder if it's possible to cancel it without canceling my whole order.
