I bought 2 of them for my god daughters but I don't think it will profit enough on resale to make it worth our time in Decemeber. But maybe I am wrong.

I don't think it is possible to predict the "xmas craze" too far in advance, unless it is artifically generated.

I picked up the last two at wal-mart and I called the local target and they are wiped out too. I am assuming they had a good amount of these in stock.

Why is it elmo? why can it be big bird, or bert or ernie? Are we biased toward red fuzzy things?

very interesting... if they are anything like the other "tickle me elmo" a few years ago that was flying off the shelves... but why are they bringing them out now instead of waiting for christmas?

i think its going to be ps3/wii.

but if you did buy them now, most places have a 90+ day return policy anyway, so you could just return it if they don't get hot...

The reason the last one was difficult to find is because the manufacturer misjudged initial demand. When the shortages appeared and the hype began the problem became even worse as people that would no have otherwise not purchased one went looking for them as well.

You can bet that many more will be made this time. Any initial shortages will likely be intentional as the company tries to build hype and increase demand. However, as Christmas gets near you can bet supply will increase.

This verison of elmo is the 10th anniversary edition of the original elmo. Soccer Moms where literally in the toy section asking for them. I am not buying them for resale because I know my two god daughters would love them.

Stolen from a post in fat wallet a cnnmoney article saying it will be a hot gift for xmas

It was just released this week and I never heard of the new verison myself. What I can't believe is that it was 10 years ago since the original! I must be getting old because it did not seem that long ago.

From Amazon:

This doll rolls around, pounds his fists laughing, slaps his knee and gets himself back up every time. It is really amazing. Fisher Price outdid themselves with this one. $34.99 (on sale at K-mart the 1st day)

With 3 kids, the oldest being 8 we've managed to limit character branded items to only a handful. They get plenty of consumer queues from popular culture, I don't need to bring elmo to life in my very own home.

(That's just me though)

i might go look for one if they're selling for that much
There's over 3500 auctions on eBay for it right now. Once the initial hysteria falls off, people will be getting MSRP for them.

KeithP is right. The company making these has nothing to gain by intentionally shorting supply all through Christmas. If anything, they'll hold back on shipments to so they get some free advertising when fistfights between soccer moms break out over these, then release a bunch around Thanksgiving so they have massive sales.
