But i don't block ads from sites like anandtech and site that I wish to support and they don't spam you with ads alll over.

I'm the same. Only if a site goes so horribly overboard with ads will I block some of them.
For me, if it moves, it gets blocked. I try to leave stuff like the nice little google ads that are just plain text (it's entertaining to see how in context they can get). If it comes down to AT not making enough money, I'll spend 5 minutes a week with adblock disabled just clicking on every ad or I'll ask for an ad free subscription but I won't have anything moving on a webpage.

Like many others, I only block popups. Regular ad banners I not only don't block, I sometimes click. They can often be useful. I found out about Guild Wars through an ad banner for it. I won a contest because of an ad banner. Google ads do a good job of giving me links that I might be interested in(very useful when they were attached to my blog).

Nah, I block popups, but I hate having empty squares with red X's where the ads would otherwise be. I think it's ugly.

I had grabbed one of those massive hosts files with tons of sites blocked. But it was too much of a pain, as too much was blocked, like every week I'd find another site I'd have to unblock.

It's just pop ups I have blocked now, nothing else.

EDIT - In Mozilla, I have collected a long of sites that I've marked as not able to write cookies. It's just something, every once in a while I'll clean out the cookies that are on the computer.

I use firefox... is that what you mean? Or you mean actual ads on web pages? I don't mind those. That;s usually the easy way to find reputable dealers. Like this forum. I would use any vendor that advertises here with no fear. Better than trying google. And this place is free for a reason you know!

You don't support the sites unless you actually visit the ads. Just displaying them does nothing. Blocking ads can limit your internet experience. I have found that ALL popup ads are terrible, but many banner ads can be beneficial. Often, as is the case with AT, they are related to what you are viewing. Especially Google ads.

Lol. You sound like you work in the marketing industry. Last I heard, people didn't put ads on sites to make them more enjoyable for readers, they do it to make money.

Does it bother you (and I'm being completely facetious here ;)) when you buy tv shows on dvd and they've taken the commercials out? :p

got a pretty big hosts file from some site, and had been adding to it myself, now additional blocking done via Adblock. Between them it probably nukes 4/5th of ads I guess? I only go add things to adblock if they're annoying - too many or flashy etc, I'm happy to leave things like google ads.

btw, since updating to firefox 1.5 (and relevant extension updates), blocked ads now show the "Unable to connect" message where they would have been (previously just showed nothing), and also clicking on the Adblock tab on flash ads etc does nothing. Any ideas what's gone wrong?

My guess would be that you should stop using hosts file blocking and just stick with adblock. It's a far more elegant solution.

What version of adblock are you using? Did you bring along the version you had installed from 1.0.x? The old stuff is known not to work with 1.5. Last I heard (although I've been out of it for a while) is that Adblock Plus is the one to be using.

Is Flashblock a program?
I still get flash ads, but hosts file blocks most banners.

Flashblock is a ff extension that replaces all flash objects with a little button that you click if you actually want to see it. It's kinda nice since the vast majority of things aren't worth seeing but you still know they're there, just in case, unlike with adblock, where you frequently can't tell what you're missing or why.
