For those who take the Bible literally do you believe that man and dinosaur lived at the same time?
I saw an evangelical Christian saying this on t.v. the other night.
I was just wondering who believes it and how you reconcile it with the scientific evidence.

How can anyone believe that dinosaurs and humans coexisted? FFS. Then again, sharks and alligators are basically the same from several hundred million years ago, so I guess we are actually living with dinosaurs right now.

The Bible was written in a simpler time for a simpler people. Throwing the fundie time frame out, God did create the universe, then the Earth, the moon, animals and last but not least, us.

Which is an EXCELLENT reason why it should be discarded.

Certainly as a scientific text it's near worthless. But to say that it has no value is just ignorant.

Well it has no value to those who do not believe in it.

Yes, I do.

In case you are interested, my reasoning goes something like this:

1. Dinosaur fossils have been found all over the world, confirming their existence in the past.
2. God created all animals, as well as humans, only days apart from each other, according to Genesis.

So, I can draw the conclusion that dinosaurs and man lived together at some point in history.

So you presume to know how long a day is to God? Show me in the Old testament where this is explained...

The Bible was written by human beings (inspired by God or otherwise). I think it's sort of a leap to assume that when they write "day" it is some unit of time that is not a day.

When it comes down to it, I would have thought the concept of time is largely meaningless to God.

Why are people bothering to debate this? Everyone knows that the bible doesn't logically add up in some places. People who have decided to believe in it anyway are not going to be persuaded by an appeal to logic, or through factual argument.

This is literally a waste of your time unless your only purpose is to feel superior to the fundies who you think are subscribing to a fairy tale to base their lives around. Religion is just one of those things that logical argument doesn't apply to.

You can say that about anything.

The Bill of Rights has no value to those who do not believe in it, so lets discard it.
Bingo, exactly what your heroes have done and you support.

While I don't necessarily believe that dinosaurs and men roamed the Earth at the same time, some of you people are just plain stupid.

There are a some reasons why we can't necessarily believe everything that we are told regarding dinosaurs.
1. Dating is inaccurate. In fact, all dates are off by, I believe, 15% because our original numbers were off by about 15% and rather than go back and redate everything, we just continue to use the wrong numbers. Imagine if your doctor thought that a 15% margin of error was alright when doing surgury.
2. There have been many cases where dinosaur prints and people prints have been found in the same area and dated to be the same age. Of course, despite the fact that tests have been run to prove that these are not fakes (some are fake, but some are not), people just dismiss those instances because they don't fit the pattern that we have already defined. This has been known to happen in other fields of research as well. You go with the majority and you dismiss the rest as a fluke or an anomoly.

So if you just blindly believe that men and dinosaurs were separated by 65 million years and call anyone an idiot or biblethumper who doesn't believe you, then you are just as bad as the people you are trying to mock. Science is about learning. You don't learn by mocking people who believe something that you don't believe. Sure, I accept that the majority of what we are told regarding dinosaurs is true, but I always leave room for the possibility that we are wrong.

Your conclusion is illogical because reason #2 is not supported by evidence.

I wonder where you get your dating figures from. The most common Carbon-14 isn't accurate beyond about 60,000 years, obviously useless when it comes to dinosaur aging.

Of course dinos lived at the same time as man. Noah employed flying dinos to gather all the animals for the ark.

For the people who say there is evidence in the fossil record of man and dinosaurs living together would you please provide some links for that?
thanks

Human and dinosaur footprints have been found in the same areas, but I've never heard that they were 'dated' the same.

True cience is also about testing theories to confirm their validity. That's the direct opposite of religion, which depends on faith, even in the absence of confirming evidence and even in the presence of contractory evidence.

For me, religion is useless. I'll stick with science.
