Do you believe that either Coke or Pepsi GENUINELY refreshes?

maybe the only thing that can TRULY refresh is water, or perhaps juices. I find that in the long run, Coke etc. just leaves me unrefreshed and craving water.

oh, I also heard a story on the radio about a research physician who challenged the notion that you have to have 7 glasses of water a day, etc... he said that was actually not true, we get plenty of water from food and even caffienated beverages, etc...

They're chock full of sodium, so no - they don't refresh.

I have a coke can here, and it says 50mg=2% Daily Value. In one can. Consider that you get the overwhelming majority of it from food you eat, 2% is really high for a 12oz beverage.

I was just about to point that out. The 20oz Diet Pepsi I have in front of me has 62.5mg of sodium

For reference, a Big Mac has 1000mg of sodium

does the coke have any potassium to balance things out?

I never understood why a lot of people claim that colas are bad for you due to the sodium. They say right on the can that they are very low in sodium. The HFCS and various acids will of course get to you after a while, though.

It depends on what i'm eating, but generally it makes me MORE thirsty than less thirsty. It definitely tastes great with pizza though, and in that case it is refreshing for me anyway. BTW, I was raised drinking Pepsi, but now I like Coke much better.

depends what you mean by refresh. Refresh isn't the opposite of thirst, that would be quench.

Refresh is sort of the opposite of tired, so I think the slogan about "refreshing" is about the caffeine more than the water.

if you drink a lot of sugary stuff, your body will get used to that being in your system and make you feel "thirsty" for more. it can quench that thirst.

as for the 8 glasses a day, glen is right. you dont need to DRINK all that, but merely get the equivalent through your food and drinking

good point, maybe I should edit the thread title

When I'm thirsty, it has to be juice or water. When I'm really thirsty, it has to be water.

I really don't drink very many carbonated beverages at all...except maybe root beer.

Yeah, with pizza, its almost a must. I think you need the carbonation to help wash the pizza grease from your mouth.
