Believe is too strong a word I think.

I have never met E.T. But I sure hope there are others out there.

Do you all think the world would panic if we found out like other life forms sorta like us exist on another planet? Me myself i would not mine it because i would want to go visit them as long as they are not hostility.

Do you all think the goverment knows more than they are letting the public know about other life forms? I think they are.

I think some people would panic and others would be intrigued, like the SETI team :)

I wouldn't doubt that the gov't has more knowledge than they let on.

Is there life circling one of the 10^21 stars in the universe: YES
Is there intelligent life circling one of the 10^21 stars in the universe: More likely than not
Is there intelligent life visiting Earth for anal probing and cattle mutilations: NO

You all ever wondered like exactly how big space was? Like if you could compare it to earth or measure it in miles. I am sure it would be huge. To big to even imagine. It would be cool to beable to travel all around space but thats not possible yet. I am sure space is so big its hard to even believe.

That would suck only because those wankers over at Team Ars Technica Lamb Chop would be dancing in the streets naked!

In regard to if the world would panic if we found out we are not alone - BIG TIME. Total Chaos for god knows how long, the implications are astounding - humanity would have a nervous breakdown. We would get over it though.

<---dreams of the implications of life on other planets//the people on earth coming together, wars and killing end in the collective effort of communicating//the space program recieves needed resources//full speed ahead!

(dream plays out like an old star trek episode)

I actually have never believed in aliens or intelligent outerspace life. I am also not sure that our government is covering anything up ala Roswell.

I dunno how you could not think in such a vast universe that there is not something else out there.

Science regarding space and exploration is still very inexact. I would like further proof on what areas on the universe could support life. If that can be given then I wonder if the areas can support intelligent life. I will just be a doubter until more evidence is given. :)

Every night I look up at the millions of stars and think arrogantly to myself....."Yep, there is no other life but what is right here on this itty bitty little planet we call earth! Yep, we are ALL ALONE"!

Why not help provide some of that evidence?

Check out the Anandtech SETI@home team, and do your part for science, history and your beloved Anandtech :)

I believe that there is life out there, whether it is intelligent or not is what I am helping to find out with the SETI program :)

I believe life must exist in one form or another on another planet. Intelegent life like us? Maybe, maybe not.

With 10^21 stars or whatever there must be life. Ameaoba, germ, something. it has to be there somewhere. A spore of some sort? Who knows.

Even though there are 10^21 stars, I don't know if there is life like us. Why? There are so many forms of life on this planet (Earth). How many species? Trillions? Quadrillions (or whatever). One of them knows how to make complex things(cars, boats, planes, etc). I don't know if monkey in the wild make tools, but I doubt it. Maybe it uses a rock to break a nut open. So the leap to humans is a gargantuan one. Hell, compared to monkeys, even the concept of shoes is a giant leap.

As for UFO's. I'll believe it when I see it. There's no reason to debate it with all the black projects our gov't has going on. Chances are UFO's are just secret military vehicles. Remember the triangle shaped, silent, black UFOS? I do. Where'd they go? Oh ya, the government made the B-2 Bomber public knowledge. I see a strange corelation. Oh, most of those sitings were over area 51...a top secret military base. So, no, i don't beleive in UFOs and won't until I see one for myself and meet the pilot. Opon meeting the pilot, that will alleviate any doubt I have about intlegent life outside of planet Earth.

Here's the scary thing:
What if the leap of intelegence of an alien specieis over us is equal to the leap of intelelegence from monkeys to us? What's that make us?

For many years, I have told my wife that, if asked (and I do think they would ask), I would leave the planet with any visiting aliens. If they gave me opportunity, I'd say goodbye first, but it wouldn't be a condition. This has come up in conversation a few times over the years (we've been married for 28 years) and it gets very mixed results from other couples.

I believe there is intelligent life outside our planet but due to the vastness of space and our current (limited) technology we may never meet or even communicate with them. That said, I don't think that should stop us from looking for ET intelligence. The research and programs we have today may lead to new technology that could allow for communication or space travel.

This thread reminds me to watch the movie Contact again. :)

You have this conversation often?

I think there is more life in the Universe. Do I believe in UFO's - certainly not.

But If there are aliens I sure hope we dont find them - cause that would probably mean they will be extinct short over long.

its weird I read in some astronomy book about all the probabilities of life existing in another planet. Basically it comes down to the fact there could be possibly be only 30 planets in the entire galaxy that could have produced intelligent life capable of space travel. Of course it takes into account that life on these planets would have to form in almost EXACTLY the same way it did on Earth (liquid water, certain temperature, certain gravity, etc).

It also said that if takes a certain time for a species to develop enough sentience to become a "galactic civilization", by all probability it should have already happened. This could mean one of two things: (1) There exists a galactic civilization and they are hiding from us or (2) Most civilizations are destroyed before they achieve 'galactization'

"Sometimes I think that the surest sign of intellegent life out there is that it hasn't tried to contact us yet."
