Do you believe in the Big Bang & Big Crunch Theory?

In physical cosmology, the Big Bang is the scientific theory that the universe emerged from an enormously dense and hot state about 13.7 billion years ago.

In cosmology, the Big Crunch is a hypothesized collapse of the universe upon itself after its expansion eventually stops ? a counterpart to the Big Bang.

Interesting recent finding.

If you don't believe in it, why?

what of the theory that there will be no big crunch? expansion until energy and heat cant be transferred and the universe eventually freezes.

or brane collision?

I think it's a joke.

Why can't people just ignore him?

I'd rather not think about it.

I think of myself as nothing in the broad scope of the universe.

Someone made a script to do just that, not sure who it is right now though.

Belief/disbelief has no place when it comes to scientific theories. Science is not religion. It is the study of observable reality, not of belief. Nor is science a democracy. Theories do not gain additional credence because more uneducated persons believe in them (or vice versa).
A more proper question would be if one supports the theory or not, although even that doesn't really matter.

<- thinks the OP was flamebaiting.

Au contraire... to you, you are the entire universe and everything in it. A conscious being's universe is its senses. All of our knowledge about the universe is merely the extension of our senses.

Big crunch theory is obsolete, it's all about the big rip. The expansion of the universe is accelerating, and there is little evidence that the universe will start compacting. Latest theories predict that the universe until all matter is ripped apart.

Well... when there is no more heat, the gravity takes over, causing a big crunch. That is, of course, unless there is enough heat in our system to create a luke warm, fully homogenous field of particles.

I think thats more of an Aristotle/Plato individualist stance. I tend to agree more with Buddha.

Ideally, this is the case. While I believe this, one must also consider what my Geology professor told the class once. Sure science is absolute, in that it's constantly changing, but one doesn't necessarily like to give up their long-held beliefs even after the science is in. Just look at the whole "the world is round/flat" debate of decades ago. Prime example.

How is it possible that, since the universe is expanding infinently, it will one day collapse on itself. Seems improbably stupid.

How ironic that you call something "stupid" because your feeble mind cannot grasp the concept.

What about the big rip? As one poster said, the universe is accelerating at the moment (for some still somewhat unknown reason) and so eventually, the universe will tear. Or, eventually gravity will finally overcome the outward expansion of the universe and cause it to collapse back in on itself.

of course I believe in it. However it relies on a shape of the universe which is not consistent with observations. It will not happen in a flat or torus/ dodecahedron shape afaik......

definately believe in the 'big bang' ................
